Onboard the ship we have a chronometer for navigation (it's rarely if ever used in these days of GPS) and I found that it was stopped, much to the 2nd mate's embarrassment as he claimed to have been winding it weekly.............. which raised my eyebrows straight away as it is battery powered (strange how you can tell when folks are telling fibs!) I know how much this chronometer cost as it was supplied by a German clock and instrument maker during one of my voyages. It was extremely expensive, however imagine my surprise when I finally managed to get inside the beautiful mahogany, brass and cut glass casing to find a really cheap and nasty movement made by Casio, just like the one you will find on any kitchen wall clock. At least, when running, it was very, very accurate but we could have saved a fortune by buying an ordinary domestic wall clock for Euro9.99 and not the neigh on Euro1500 the company paid for it because it came with a "Certificate of Rating"! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
