Diesel fuel and very cold weather

This item might be of interest to those in cold parts of the UK over the next week. It's a well known and ancient problem but with -20c forecast for parts of the UK drivers of diesel powered cars and vans who are used to driving petrol powered cars should be aware that they can have problems with waxing.

I would recommend at this time of year you only use diesel from a forecourt with branded diesel - there is more chance that you will get all the right additives for the time of year direct from the oil majors than from a supermarket forecourt. Anyway I have found that using Shell/BP/Esso or whatever I actually get better mpg than when I run on cheaper supermarket diesel so the 1p a ltr difference is actually recovered by better fuel consumprion 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

After 8 days of clear blue skies by day and cloudless starry nights and -6 to -10c overnight and about -1c during the day I looked out at 11pm last evening and noticed OVERCAST skies - not a good sign. This morning it is still overcast and we have a further 2" of the white stuff BUT at least we now have +2c outside! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

It used to be at these temps they advised keeping the tank as full as possible. Don't know if that makes a difference. TDV6 - gone

I think that they are concerned that the waxing occurs where the fuel lines are exposed to the windchill of passing air under the car, pity that the fuel system. A couple of years ago when I was a schoolboy Whistle Whistle the bus driver used to light a bonfire under the bus on cold mornings to "de-wax" the fuel lines.............. then one day there we had no bus to school as the whole underside of it had caught fire! Smart bus driver, we were delighted to have a day off school too! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Same as the Russians during WW2. They put braziers under the engines to stop them freezing solid.

Didn't realise you went that far back Tim Whistle TDV6 - gone
