Thought I had better give you all a second dose of my avatar, (bet you can't guess my current car brand Very Happy )

Anyway thanks to all responding about the HDC, but we still have a couple of questions

If you set the switches to snow and start going down a steep hill is the only thing you touch the steering wheel? I understand the "laws of physics" so what happens if the HDC is not controlling the car, do you try to steer to the edge of the road (more grip) or try to drive on uncrushed snow, can you then try the brakes yourself (I know you are in a 4 wheel slide at that point in time)

Thinking of my wife Big Cry driving Big Cry the car at this point

I assume on the flat with 4 wheel drive, abs etc the grip is 10 times that of a normal car - 2 or 4wd

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

KC, all you need touch is the steering, HDC will look after the braking and speed, you will not stop but you will go very slowly. If you feel it safe to go a little faster then the HDC speed can be adjusted up or down using the +/- button of the the cruise control. If the hill is a steep down slope I would also put the TR into Grass/Gravel/Snow and switch from hi to lo box as Low 1st will provide plenty of engine braking which will help the HDC. DO NOT PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL, that will over-ride the HDC which will progressively fade out. Once the downslope has been negotiated then disable the HDC and switch back to Hi box. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim, forgot to tell you the most important bit.........you need to be in Neutral to change from High range to Low range and vice versa Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation TDV6 - gone

Sorry guys for bothering you, but I have two quick questions about my 2006 RRS TDV6 HSE:
1 - does HDC work also in reverse?;
2 - Shall I stop the car before engaging / disengaging HDC?
3 - Can it be used going up the hill? (might be a silly question...)

Question 2 wise, I was thinking of that situation when you go slow, but the car starts sliding, so you make up for not having engaged HDC before by pressing the button while sliding... is it possible?

I was also thinking at the other situation with the system enagaged and, when the slope finishes, you feel like disengaging it without stopping the car.

2) NO - it fades in and out progressively these days, when HDC was developed it was much more noticeable than it is now. It used to come in with a sudden jolt on Freelander 1 and when it cut in you could be going quite fast. It has always faded out slowly when switch back off
3) YES, in fact you can use it anywhere................................ BUT only switch it on when you think you will need it as leaving it on all the time will give you a very unpleasant ride and will eat you discs and pads VERY quickly!

When you use it either in forwards or reverse the +/- key for the cruise control can be used to allow the HDC to operate at faster speeds of descent down the slope (it is safe enough to go a bit faster down). The reason for it operating in reverse is to avoid the danger of getting your car "cross slope" and into a situation where it could roll. Also if you disengage HDC before you get to the bottom of the slope it will not disengage immediately. If you are going down a hill and feel the car starting to slide then you should already be in LO ratio and 1st gear so you can use engine braking to slow the car, if the back of the car feels like it wants to overtake the front you must apply power and drive the car out of the situation and recover it from that before doing anything else.
