United Kingdom
DPF - Diesel particulate filter

What is one of these and what does it do?

In France there are two versions of every RRS for sale - ones with a DPF and those without. It adds about 750 euros to the price.
In the UK there is no mention of a DPF so do the UK models come with it as standard or is it just a French thing?

It strangles the engine! Not really, but it's really not worth it - if you have the option, then always get the non-DPF version.

It's an option in the UK as well.

In mainland Europe isn't there also a huge tax penalty if your car isn't fitted with a DPF?
KC, what it does is filter the soot smuts that your engine emits, problem is that if you do mainly town motoring then you clog the filter quickly and it is quite a job to get it cleaned out involving keeping the car at low speed and high RPMs for a considerable distance. Best without one unless you have to have it 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Tax regimes seem to work on CO2 not diesel dust, although Europe's a big place and I could be wrong (even about Lux). Wink

DPF was a standard feature on the first D4 production run IIRC, and then became a cost option. I guess that was for homogolation reasons in this green age. I suppose the RRS MY10 was the same.

For most drivers DPF is no problem and it cuts the soot. There's more soot than you might think. Here's what happens when you remove the inflation tube from a Takla airjack on my non-DPF D3 after perhaps 10 seconds of inflation:

If you expect to do mostly town driving or a lot of off-road driving with stand-still engine running, DPF is not so good unless you can regenerate it with a short spell of constant, moderately high speed driving.

Here's a link on DPFs, originally posted by Martin on DISCO3. http://ect.jmcatalysts.com/site.asp?siteid=833&pageid=868

(Edited to recommend that you read the "regeneration" part in the link above)
