If you search on here there are a few recent posts on this - IIRC around £125 dealer supplied - as for fleabay and risk ..... Confused

A dealer will want to make it worth his time £ wise
Speak to your supplying dealer for his view ?

I've recently had a new key via warranty - they aren't cheap so was thankful for the freebie.

I was told they had to be ordered against a cars specific VIN from the factory.

I am not sure though whether the VIN is programmed in at the factory, or if the VIN is just to ensure that the key part matches the cars ignition barrel and door lock, and that the dealer takes care of all of the electrnic pairing - which is the labour they carge you!

If your getting a completely blank one from Fleabay, then as well as the dealer electronic pairing, you're going to need someone who can cut the key for you to match your ignition barrel and door lock!

Dealers can't program / reprogram key fobs that were not specifically issued for your VIN at the factory, they don't have the proper software. All they can do is enable or disable a key on the car it was originally programmed for. The EEPROM in the fob needs to be programmed at the Land Rover factory with your VIN and other vitals, checked against the data in the car's CPU every time you slide the key in the ignition. No match, no start. The blank blade may very well be cut to size by a locksmith, but all you'll be able to do with it is operating the emergency lock on the front door. The key will never start your car or remotely lock or unlock your doors. Don't waste your money on eBay, unfortunately you need to order any replacement or additional keys for the RRS through an (overpriced) dealer by showing them proof of ownership, then wait a few days for them to receive it from the factory, then bring them the car and all your remaining keys so they may sync / re-sync them all with your vehicle. If you leave any keys at home, once the dealer enables the new ones those will automatically stop working.
