Good luck in trying to get anywhere with VOSA on safety issues! I complained to them about the hesitation on pull away in my xc 90 and despite there being some 40 plus complaints forwarded to me to use along with 2 other owners that made individual complaints, all they did was ask VCUK to investigate! They never came and saw mine or any of the other cars and borrowed one from VCUK for a test drive!

In the end I got a polite letter back telling me that "as far as VOSA are concerned the vehicle is operating as designed"

I called and pointed out that I wasn't disputing that but the fact that the way it operated was unsafe! Still never got anywhere with them! Complete waste of time TBH!

As a seperate point, there are TWO vehicle safety engineers that cover the UK! I pointed out that they may be slightly understaffed at that and got a facts and figures speel!

VOSA exist to harrass and persecute the haulage industry in this country and is just there to raise more cash for G Brown to hose up the wall! Sure that V8 Andy will concur if he's had any dealings with them on the road! Current, M135i in Estoril Blue with more extras than the cast of Ben Hur.

Well clearly the lack of response on this topic is fantastic news for both LR and D3 owners, for all LR have to do now is empty out the parts bin marked 'D3 EPB' and refill it from the 'RRS EPB' bin.





Seriously, another reminder to those of you who have experienced problems to look back at the original post and join in. Otherwise, even if you never have to await the LRA to recover you, there's a good chance that the next time you take your car in for a service, you'll find the price has risen to cover the added time and parts in removing, cleaning, adjusting and refitting EPB.

Interesting that a MY10 has had a failure! At the DISCO3.CO.UK factory visit at the end of the summer we were assured that the EPB system had been sorted out. Really looks like it! As an offroader my D3 is superb when everything is working, when the "family car" (SWMBO's D3) is up for replacement it won't be a LR product!

the RRS service schedule already includes cleaning and adjusting the EPB, so is already charged for.

The issue I have is that the EPB doesn't last the service interval without needing adjusting or cleaning. This I believe should be done free of charge at a more frequent interval, when required.

Either the LR recomended Service Schedule is incorrect, or the EPB is not fit for purpose.

I was unaware of that; thank you for the update. I agree with your conclusion, however all incidents need to be brought to LR's attention, and the VOSA "channel" appears to be bringing the best degree of attention so far.
As DSL relates, LR believed the issue to have been addressed on new builds, so D4/RRS MY10 failures are of more importance.

An update folks:

LR sent their techies down from Solihull to a local dealership to inspect the vehicle today. They've taken the brake parts away for further testing and will report to VOSA who will in turn forward the report to me. In the meantime they have replaced all the parts with new ones (still to the original design) and adjusted everything to factory spec, all FOC.

MY10 has a revised backplate, shoes and drum, supposedly to prevent this happening, so if anyone with a MY10 has this problem, we REALLY need to know and VOSA should be informed

I hear and appreciate the comments re. VOSA and the haulage industry, but it's the best channel available to us for open and constructive dialogue, as opposed to the UK press and their particular agenda.

To answer the question re. the cable release, this failed to work. This was probably because when this happened the torque clutch and pawl had reached the end of their travel and were in a "no return" position, hence no amount of pulling on the cable would release it. I must stress this is NOT LR telling me this, this comes from my own understanding of a discussion I had with a respected LR independent expert.  Two lives - lived one

This is a typical scenario:

1. EPB starts playing up, squeaking or other noises.
2. Take it to dealer.
3. They say "Needs strip, clean and adjust" ££££££££
4. You say" Is it covered under new car warranty?"
5. They say "No"
6. Get angry.
7. Wife gets angry.
8. They say "Only mechanical failure as per the TSB is covered"
9. You say " Explain how you know without even taking the wheels off that its not a mech failure?"
10. Dealer goes quiet.
11. Threaten them with Trading Standards for qouting for work without an inspection.
12. All gets a bit awkward.
13. Work done at very reduced price with tea and biscuits offered.

Must have made a fortune out of the EPB at £250 a time for above scam.

Still makes me mad 10 months later

I point blank refuse to pay, full stop. Nicely, but still a refusal. I feel bad that the dealers take it on the chin when LR won't reimburse, but not so sorry that I'll share the pain.

Not so easy to not pay and then not have the use of your car as the EPB is binding, must be mobile to keep the horse fed and watered twice a day
I rang several dealers before paying and all stated a charge for strip and clean. I am 100% behind you on this No Dosh as I went right into this at the time. It is not fit for purpose to be used in a 4x4 and cleaning/adjust should be covered by warranty at the least.
