Colour Coding - your thoughts please

Popped into the dealer the new s/c is coming from on Friday. Main reason for the visit was to fill in all my details on the 0% finance thingy, but while there discussed colour coding bits and bobs before I collect the car (car should arrive a week before I can collect, so plenty of time to colour code).

We discussed...
Side trim, bottom of doors
Trim around side "vent"
Front bumper
Grill surround
Rear bumper
Rear load scuff trim

Quite like the look of the HST I currently have with colour coded bits, and think the side trim, and the front and rear bumpers would look OK, but does anyone have any thoughts about the door handles, and rear load scuff trim (can't think of a better way to describe that bit).

How do you all feel about colour coding in general? Is it worth the bother?

Cheers, Bradders.

I don't mind colour coding but I happen to like the out of the showroom (on 20's) look you get on a RRS providing the car is Java/Santorini black or buckingham/bali blue. More lighter the car (silver) the more I prefer colour coded. Gone: RRS : HSE : TDv6 : 57 : Java Black : Ebony : 20"

Why? No one except you will know, and the new cars have very little to bother with and I think it narrows your market come resale? 'Standard' is better in my book. 2010MY Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE

Agree with you on this one - that's something I would most definately not do.

Do you really think it would affect resale?

Had thought of it more as a "finishing touch". Guess I must have an odd taste - I think my black HST looks great with colour coding, which I believe was standard.

Colour coding is a personal choice so it could potentially affect resale as some purchasers such as myself would be looking to buy a RRS that was as close to standard as possible bar a couple of subtle mods like clear indicators or headlights de tangoed. Gone: RRS : HSE : TDv6 : 57 : Java Black : Ebony : 20"

There's a certain irony in you wanting to colour code a part thats main reason for being is to protect the paint on the bumper Rolling with laughter

It would not have put me off buying one but then it would have to have looked pristine - more paint especially in areas that are prone to stone chipping means more costs associated with keeping it looking good.

Definitely agree with others regarding letting the roof "float" - this is a major design element.

Not seem any signs of chipping at all on the bumper on the HST - which is factory colour coded. Although I can understand that at re-sale any chips would potentially put someone off.

As I said before, I've no thoughts of coding the roof pillars at all.

I've gone for Santorini Black.

Bradders,

It looks miles better, it will not affect resale value in a negative direction, do it!.

true.....but MOST purchasers would prefer colour coding (done right) so no way it will adversely affect resale value

They're the key words... "done right"... but you see some right old dog's breakfasts where you've got the roof pillars colour coded etc and you'd have to be simple (or a footballer) to buy one like that.

Again, no plans to do the roof pillars!! Laughing

Thanks for the thoughts Jonny. It will be done by the dealer, so if I go ahead, it better be "done right" or it will be going back!

Quick question to the naysayers..... Do you all run off-road in yours? Is this the reason for the "dont do it" answers. Could understand more if this were the case, as I can imagine more potential for damage/chips etc this way.

Time for a bit of heresy here - for some reason the off-black plastic bits remind me of the City Rover!

OK, back to reality - has anyone got experience of painted door handles? Do they chip/crack/look trashy quickly, or did you find them quite resiliant?

bradders I have everything below the window lines done, i.e. no roof pillars, did it PROPERLY at a cost of £2K, I have heard of it much much cheaper but mine looks as good as the day it was done 18 months ago.
