2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

You mentioned you have were only replacing 2 tyres on the rear - you can cause a lot of damage to the transmission running different tread patterns on front and rear axles as the VC is set up for the same tread tyres all round. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black

Thats news to me.When i bought the car from stratstone in pickering they supplied it with dunlops on the front and the original contis on the back. the front tires were unevenly worn when i went to view the car, so they said that they would replace them, i asked for contis but they said that the dunlops were a better tyre. With them being a main dealer i went with it. I have to say its the first time ive heard of different tread patterns on the front and rear, causing damage to a car. Could u elaborate tim. thanks.

p.s whats the vc

What I have been told is that running a hitech 4x4 with different tread patterns between axles causes the 4x4 system to operate continuously to overcome the different frictions between the axles, causing wear to transmission. At one stage with the Volvo XCountry and XC's if you got a puncture in one tyre your were advised to replace all 4 running tyres because of the differing amount of wear on the tyres!

VC is a viscous coupling - it changes the amount of drive going to the front and rear axles or across an axle 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

My tyre bloke always used to say it was more important to keep the tyres identical across axles rather than front or back.... but the drivetrain wear explanation is always one that is banded about. That said, can't say I've ever heard of a 4x4 going bang because of this. Conversely, I wouldn't want to be the first to try Whistle

I know nothing about the Toyos but the Hankooks are brilliant! Better than the Pirelli summer tyres in that size! Smile
Mine have about 20k mls now and look like new! Smile

...and all four cost about 450€ incl. fitting! - The difference to the pirellis is enough to pay a BAS remap! Very Happy RRS TDV6 HSE, 2006, bonatti grey, ebony interior, rear diff, s/c grille and vents, stormers, privacy, tasmods, iphone integration Wink

youve got me worried now tim. Does anyone know what landrover say on this matter. Is it in the manual. Seeing as stratstone supplied me the car with different tyres on the front and back, do you think i could take it up with them. If as you say, my current configuration, or even my previous configuration of tyres is causing detrimental damage to the transmission of the vehicle, i could ask stratstone to remedy this matter for me. Like i say this is the first time i have heard of anything like this. Have you heard of anyone causing damage to their vehicle because of this.

I have to add, that the car has been back to the dealer on a few occasions for warranty work, and the the dealers have never ever mentioned that this could cause a problem.

I thought only the freelander has a VC and the RRS was permanent 4WD mode. If this is the case then having different tires front and back still detrimental to the transmission?

UK Law states
"It is a legal requirement to ensure that tyres of different construction types are not fitted to opposite sides of the same axle. The two main tyre types are radial and cross-ply, and these must not be mixed on the same axle.

Mixing brands and patterns of the same construction type is permissible depending on the vehicle type and manufacturers recommendation."

This is the text from the handbook:

Quote:
Ideally, tyres should be replaced in sets of four.
If this is not possible, replace the tyres in pairs
(front and rear). When tyres are replaced, the
wheels should always be re-balanced and
alignment checked.
