I have recently sold my wifes D3 and bought her a nice new Mini Cooper S. I didn't opt for the factory fitted Sat Nav as I thought it was rubbish. What is the best portable Sat Nav system on the market. Has to be easy to use (It's for a woman!) and have speed Camera alerts. The only other thing is it must be able to avoid Harvey Nichols, Joseph and other fashion retailers! 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Everything I have read about the mini's sat nav is that it isn't worth the money - poor software and difficult to read display seems to be a common verdict by the motoring journos. I have the Navman system installed on an iPaq PDA and that has "Avoid areas" in the program which might be useful for your purposes! Strangely it is also based on the Navteq mapping that is availble on the LR system but there are no avoid areas on that!
At least with a PDA or TomTom system you can update them on the internet - take a look in Aldi or Lidl (if such shops exist in the leafy corners of Surrey where the streets are all occupied by multimillionaires) as they often have cracking deals on Median PDA based satnav systems.
Basically you are looking for a satnav that has no London/Leeds or Edinburgh addresses in it then VA  2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

One of my mates has a garmin which give speed cameras and acts as a phone handsfree kit

HAd a Tom Tom for years now and it cant be beaten. HAd other pda based before that and none of them came close to the accuracy of the Tom Tom and it has the avoid option as discussed.  Current, M135i in Estoril Blue with more extras than the cast of Ben Hur.

I can recommend the Tom Tom

I've got an old Tom Tom 520. Had it for years and it's never let me down. Maps of UK, Ireland and mainland Europe and bluetooth compatability for hands free phone. As said earlier the maps can easily be updated via the internet. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.

Garmin are very good, thin, good mounting plate, on a flat ish surface is a great bonus too....good graphics too

I work all over the UK and drive over 500miles a week sometimes.

I wouldn't use anything other than a Tomtom, they are reliable, good value, upgradeable and most of all, usable

I've tried others and compared to a Tomtom the interface is terrible.

The ONE series are the cheapest, GO series have the Bluetooth for the handsfree and LIVE does traffic.

IQ routes is the newest thing that Tomtom does and this will change your route based on traffic and time of day.

I think they're great  I keep telling myself 'It's a toy'
But I've broken quite a lot of toys in my time.....

My wife prefers my Tom Tom to the Garmin she has, easier to use and she can relate to the mapping and when to turn instructions better with the Tom Tom. Garmin unit not very precise on when to turn instructions.

Only have Garmin because it covers the channel Islands, TOm Tom still have it down as green blob in the sea

TOMTOM all day long i do on average 400 miles a day & 99.9% of the time it gets me to the door step

Have been using TomTom for 8 years now, tried a Garmin Nuvi but went back to the TomTom. Wifey uses a TomTom Go910, it has a 20Gb hard drive and can store quite a few maps for diffrent regions also has bluetooth for GSM connection and can live update your route, Loads of diffrent voices for it too I use "Andy McDriver" and the wife uses a Vlaams voice.
I also use a TomTom rider on my motoer bike it links to the helmet via bluetooth and can display sms messages from your GSM on it's screen, you cannot start a call while riding but you can answer an incoming call Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh
