Some advise please:

I have what looks like sellotape or some other type of residue on both the front and back of my RRS( just above the number plates). I didnt notice this when I first bought it (silly I know). I have spoken to the dealer, and they have said its probably the remains of the sticky backs when they put the number plates on...They have suggested using tar and glue remover...has anyone ever used this stuff before? I have never come across it or had the need to use it? I have attempted to remove the stains via a hand car wash but the stains are still there..any advice greatly appreciated.

Yes, any of those sticky stuff removers should work - you can get various brands from your local hardware store. Some of the hardcore cleaning types on here might be able to suggest a particular brand, so sit tight

White Spirit on a cloth, gently rubbed on it will also work BUT don't use turps or paint remover! T-Cut for metallic paint might also remove it. I have used automotive tar remover on things like this before but it will also remove any wax on the car too so you'll have to redo this if you need too

does it feel tacky? Or could it be some sort of etching on the clear coat

No, it doesnt feel tacky. its very strange...but its very smooth to touch....Its v very hard to actually tell whether the stains are on top of the paintwork or whether they are part of the paintwork??!!...if you put your fingers over it...you cant feel any difference...yet the stain is clearly visible... RRS Supercharged!!!!

Sounds like etching on the paint. Without actually seeing it or a picture of it, it is hard to diagnose.

If you rub the pad of your thumb back and forth over it generating heat your soon tell if its the remnants of adhesive taps.

Failing that use a small amount of polish such as Auto Glym super resin, as this has cleaners and a very mild abrasive. Again rub over it and see what happens. Dont be scared to use a bit of elbow on it (usual disclaimers apply)

If it's etching, your either looking at machine correction, wetsanding and correction or bodyshop. Etching could have come from the adheive tape, if left in place in direct/strong sunlight for a while

New car ?? Not your problem.....

Take it back - if they have used tape to align your plates then their bodyshop will be able to buff it out ....

I cannot imagine why sticky pads would be used outside the plate area and if they've owned up to it when fitting plates then they ought to sort it!!!!!

Thats exactly what it sounds like...I'll give it a go with the auto glym this weekend and let you know the results. failing that, I will be on the phone to the dealer who I bought it from ( the car was an approved used car, not a brand new one), and get them to sort it out themselves. I'll try and get a pic of the stain to you for further advice!

WD40 works well on sticky residues.

So you have a sticky residue on your new car.

However there is no sticky residue...i had it looked at by a bodywork specialist and they are pretty sure that some of the lacquer has been removed when the tape was removed from the car...its being dealt with by the dealer now. Car is awesome, drives like a dream...just looks unsightly with this damage to the paintwork! RRS Supercharged!!!!
