Guys,

I am going on vacation in a few weeks, driving the RRS ('09 TDV8) up to Scandinavia. This will be a trip of about 4'000km, and as I am spending around 2'000 of those on Autobahns and Motor-ways in Germany, and Scandinavia, I was wondering what is the optimum rpm for getting the best mileage of the TDV8? At app. 2'300rpms I am going about 140km/hr, but of course I could easily be pushing that to 2'500/2'700rpms, going app. 160km/hr.

I know it is a question of max power at optimum rpms, and that would mean I should be pushing no further than 2'000rpms, which according to Land Rover gives the max torque of 640Nm.

Any advice?

If you're prepared to drive very slowly then I've found about 60mph to be the best speed (or about 100KPH). I've did this once when I was waiting for my wife to catch me up in her car and it seemed to be the optimal speed. From memory I think I was getting about 36-38mpg at 60mph.

Sat at 70mph on the cruise with the odd blast up to to get away from madfolks I get 31-33mpg with my TDv8 on a 500 mile journey from Stirling(Scotland) to Southampton (South England). It's much more relaxing just to sit there and let the car go at steady rpm than to blast all the time - diesels give better mpg/ l/100km if you leave them sat at on the cruise at steady RPM. If you are happy to sit at 55-60 then as R33 says you will see more than 35mpg, but who wants to sit at that speed all day long! BTW I can do the journey above on 3/4 tank of tractor juice even with the climate control set at 18 and the centre cubby box cooler running. One thing that really isn't at all helpful if you are trying to stretch the fuel consumption is the adaptive cruise control, it applies far too much braking too often, thus wasting fuel - maybe we need regenerative braking adaptive cruise control! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

its not many people who worry about mpg on trips!

if they did they wouldnt be taking a range rover!!

if you get decent mpg whatever model you drive you d be chuffed.....and pleasantly suprised!

if i get 14-15mpg on a run i m well pleased!!

most i ever had out of my td6 was 30ish......

James I think you would be surprised how many folks don't want to burn a huge hole in the holiday motoring budget. In my case I don't have another suitable car for that sort of trip and it's still cheaper than flying from where I live! What I would love to know is what MPG all the Priuses that overtook me on the M6 recently and doing certainly more than 80mph were getting - I bet I was getting better MPG than them! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

i hear you, but to drive that car and be constantly thinking cant let the revs go above a certain amount,is gonna be a stressful fruitless exercise!! lets be honest!

if its a holiday surely its meant to be fun/relaxing.......by taking a range rover and stressing about the fuel economy its not gonna be that is it?

if i regularly did massive miles then i m sure it would be more of a concern to me, but if i was that concerned i wouldnt be driving a range rover!

Fair point - one of the main reasons I got rid of mine was that I was about to start a job that was going to do me 25k miles a year and fuel was costing me north of £500 a month. In an SC it would have cost me twice that

And to answer the original question - the "old" optimum speed used to be 56mph and it won't be far off that now.

In Germany I would go full trottle...

I had a local tradesman at the house yesterday to see about putting up a satellite dish. He was admiring the RRS, which he thought was a FFRR, and he was amazed to hear that even at it's worst excess (my worst consumption has been 24mpg running on supermarket diesel) my TDv8 gets better mpg than his Mitsubishi crewcab gets on a good day! Admittedly he is running with a full length roofrack loaded with ladders and the Mitsu is running on nonstandard 19" wheels and tyres BUT even when running unloaded he reckons he has never got anywhere near to the govt fuel consumption figures quoted by Mitsuibishi UK. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I know that when I bought the RRS I also bought a thirsty car. I was just wondering what the optimum speed/RPMs are driving on autobahn. It is a long trip and if I can save a bit on diesel by not going full throttle, I'll have that much more to spend on other things.

Now I just wish the consumption meter in the dash was not an average, but the actual reading in that second.
