It's summertime and the roadworks have started....

Maybe for the summer we should have a thread for those sections of roads and motorways best avoided due to roadworks / heavy / slow moving traffic and with your local knowledge a route to avoid the bottleneck.

I'll kick it off with

A84 - the main road from the M9 at Stirling to the Western Highlands from Stirling via Doune to Callander:
Two large sets of roadworks where a new roundabout is being built just off the M9 J11 (Stirling/Callander/Fort William) turn off and where an ancient bridge at Doune is being strengthened.
Duration of roadworks - the whole summer
Delays - expect at least 1 hour unless travelling this section in the evening/night/ early morning

This route is preferred by those towing caravans from the east of the UK to the North West Highlands via Crianlarrich to Glencoe and the west coast and also it is the only route to the west suitable for coaches and goods vehicles so even on a quiet day there is plenty of slow traffic. It's also harvest time so plenty of tractors!

Alternative - Either come off the M74/M73 at J2 and take the M8 through Glasgow and follow the signs to the Erskine bridge (it's no long a toll bridge so free to cross these days), then take the A82 up the west side of Loch Lomond to Crianlarrich (North of Tarbert though the road is narrow and twisty)

or
Continue on the M80/A80 to Stirling (although there are also roadworks on a section of this where it is being widened) and at J9 Bannockburn come off the motorway and head through the town to join the A811 and go cross country to the Kippen roundabout, then take the route to Thornhill and Callander to rejoin the A84 or you can continue west to Loch Lomond and join the A82. Going via Thornhill will add about 15 minutes to your journey but at least you won't be stopped waiting in standing traffic for an hour.
or
Stay on the M9 until you get to the A9, follow the signs to Braco, just north of Dunblane, and Comrie, then join the A85 heading west via Locheranhead to join the A84 again at Lochearnhead. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

So Scotland is closed for the summer then?

Heard the midges were escaping south of Hadrians wall by hitching lifts on car windscreens and special quarratine measures introduced as fear of swine flu being spread much further and wider by these cunning little devils. Rolling with laughter

What do you mean S, that IS the only road and it's being dug up too! I'm surprised that we have the only roadworks blackspot in the UK though! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
