Newbie with a heap of questions

Hi guys n gals,

After mooching around the site for a while now, I've decided to join the ranks and hopefully get myself a second hand rangie sport soon.

I used to have a P38, but lost confidence in it when the suspension wet itself a number of times, so sold it and bought a Classic with manual everything. She's a great car, but I do miss the air suspension!

Anyways, I'm hoping that some of you can help with a few questions I've got.........

Is there a way to seal the raised air intake to allow for the odd occasion that the water is deeper than expected. I live in Cairns and some creek/river crossings are a little tricky to walk first due to crocs.

Is the TD V6 enough, or will I wish I'd bought a TD V8. I think the answer is obvious, but the V6 has cheaper rego, insurance, cheaper tyres and can be chipped.

Can anyone comment on how the RRS goes on corragated roads?

I have MTRs on my Classic, and while they are the best tyre I've used they are pretty noisey on the bitumen. Does this still apply to the RRS, even though it has better sound deadening?

I like the look of the G4 roof rack. Can it fit a spare wheel, 2 x 20 ltr jerries, and a pair of max trax 'waffle' boards.

My Classic has a winch, which I've used a couple of times in anger, so I'd consider fitting one to the RRS. Does anyone have a winch on theirs that they have a picture of, because I'm interested how far they stick out.

Lastly, I would be fitting a second battery (for fridge and emergency starting of the engine should the primary battery die). Is there a simple way to swap the supply to the boot 12V outlet from the main battery to the 2nd battery.

Sorry for all the questions. I test drove a TD V6 and it was awesome, a bit like a 38 after a slab of red bull. The car has sold, but the stealer is getting another one in soon and I want to get as much info' as I can. (The nearest dealer to my local one is 400 klms away so I'm a little stuck with choice)

Hey. This seems like a man who has a proper use for a RRS (not like some of us townies).

Well done mate. But don't wimp out with those crocodiles - you could take 'em in a fight. I've been mad for flipping years, absolutely years, over the edge for yonks.

Hi

Obviously the TDV8 is a better choice over the TDV6 if you ignore the cost difference, however ignoring the TDV8 for a minute, the TDV6 is still a great engine and I believe does fit nicely into the RRS. The RRS chassis can just handle more power/speed so the TDV8 is always going to feel like the engine it should always have had. Power aside, the TDV6 is still a great engine and definetely worth it.

Sorry I have no useful answers to the rest of your questions though

Welcome, and great to hear someone using their Sport the way it should be used Embarassed

VA had a winch and roof rack fitted to his TDV6 as well as MTR's IIRC.

You can get a snorkel for the RRS if that helps with the raised air intake Question

By all accounts, the tyres are still noisy on tarmac but probably not as bad as at the moment Question

Thanks for the help so far.

The RRS will hopefully be a worthy replacement for my old Classic, although I'm still a little worried about reliability and 'toughness'......corragated roads can cause big problems....even to Landcruisers.

Can anybody help with the questions..... Bow down Less is more, more or less

Roof rack should do the job for what you want to carry but not a lot of room will be left.

Winch fits height wise where the number plate is now and does not stick out to far like disco 2.

dual battery kit done by www.traxide.com.au

Will need to buy Optima blue or yellow top to fit in second battery tray as a bit on the small side and has height issues as well.

The G4 raised air intake is just that not waterproof, not sure if you can do it with that kit or whether you would have to buy find different kit.

corrugated roads causes problems as keeps lowering over 30mph to normal height, have also head it overheats if used for long periods in hot climates. Have to keep switchng it off and on.

TDV6 probably better for off road as has 19 inch wheels fitted and a winch cannot be fitted if ACC is fitted like on the TDV8.

Welcome DMH, Safari snorkels do a RAI for the D3 http://www.safarisnorkel.com/snorkel/ss385HF/ss385hf.htm, I am not sure whether this is transferable to the Sport, might be worth speaking to a few outlets, not sure if the rake of the front pillar is more aggresive on the sport compared to the Disco.

There are a few examples of RAI's, but not sure if they are sealed, Stephenw as done some mods that may help http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic6161.html. Picture of his Sport with RAI/Snorkel here

I am sure he would not mind you pinging him Thumbs Up

In regard to corrugated roads i have drove on them for an hour or two without any problems, the usual applied, faster the smoother, however that was at standard height not off-road, so if just a gravel road without high crowns, hopefully you will not have any problems. If you need off-road height, you are restricted to 42KPH before it lowers Sad

Might be worth speaking to the D3 crowd ANZ forum and see if they have had any adverse affects in terms of the D3.

Range Rover Sport club or Land Rover owners club in Oz are both good sources, i believe someone took their Sport up Cape York without any hassles, might be worth having a hunt around their sites as well. Thumbs Up Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

Hi

Thanks for all the help, much appreciated.

I did see a you tube clip of a Sport up in Cape York

I spoke to the dealer about the raised air intake. The reason why they don't increase the wading depth, if raised air intake is fitted, is because the pipe that connects to the air filter box (inside the wing) has "holes in it" ???

Anyways, thanks again Thumbs Up Less is more, more or less

DMH might be worth speaking to Safari theres may be a sealed unit (assuming it fits a Sport). Could be hassles however with deeper wading with some of the electronics that are scattered around, you may have to seal some, once again D3 is a good source

I'd love to buy and use all the clobber you referred to in your post (winch etc) , however, would probably look like a proper tool driving around the UK roads - even in North Yorkshire!!

Get posting some pics if/when you take the plunge!

Air intake can be sealed - look at our sister site disco3.co.uk for info. Only problem is that other parts get exposed to the water when wading too deep, seem to remember waterproofing isn't too good.

RRS on corragated roads - just drive fast and it's great.

TR's - yes noisy but you live with it. I would say about 20% more noise.

Yes you can fit 1 spare and 2 jerries. I'm sure with a bit of clever placing the waffle boards will fit too.

Winch - look at my albums.

2nd battery - no simple way but not too difficult to run a new cable. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

Thanks for that VA.

Just been looking at your album. Pretty nice set up!

The wife test drove a Stornaway grey one (TDv6), and loved it. Probably put a deposit on her (the rangie, that is) tomorrow.

(I'm away in Brazil, so hopefully the dealer isn't trying to pass a lemon on to her whilst I'm not there)

Cheers
