United Kingdom 2009 Range Rover Sport TDV6 SE Java Black
Am I just lucky?

Hi all,

I have had my new RRS for a whole week now. It's a TDV6 SE and according to the land rover website should be fitted with 18" wheels. Thing is it's not - its on 10 spoke 20" with 275/40 Pirelli Scorpions. Has the spec changed recently or had they just run out of 18"ers the day they made mine. I'm not complaining of course, just curious. I'd be unstoppable - if I could just get started

20" wheels on this model could be either a factory fit option, dealer fit option or if its secondhand could have been an Ebay fit option! - in which case they may not be genuine. Genuine wheels have the LR logo cast into the wheels on the inside.

Plenty of hot discussion re genuine v non genuine wheels on this forum.

If its a new vehicle and you haven't been charged the dealerr may have made an oversight - I had this with running boards and tow bar on a new vehicle - worth about £800 Cool

Is the spare an 18" or 20" ??

Definitely not standard - 20" never is on a TDV6.

Is this a lease car or something? I don't understand how you can go through the sale process without being made aware of this either by cost or the salesperson pointing it out as a 'free' extra?

Plenty of 20s on TDV6s, but only as a factory option or an aftermarket addition not as default.

If this is a new car that you ordered, and you've ended up with 20s that you didn't expect I'd be keeping quiet Wink And be thankful for extra couple of inches Whistle

It's brand new 09. I lease my cars but I do know I haven't been charged extra for 'em cos the price was agreed before my dealer ordered the car. Seems like I did get lucky after all. They certainly do look blingy though and as you say an extra couple of inches always helps to impress! I'd be unstoppable - if I could just get started

You were unlucky. The 20" rims are too low profile for this type of car. Replace them with a stock 19" for a much more comfortable ride. If you want low profilers, buy an M3 Saloon to go with them. I've been mad for flipping years, absolutely years, over the edge for yonks.

I disagree strongly

Having previously stuffed up with a BMW kitted to M Sport spec with bling rims I was wary of my TDV8 having 20" as standard

However it rides very well especially on the cr4ppy tarmac and roads around here which made me cringe and rattle driving the old BMW

the difference in ride between 19s and 20s is miniscule if any at all. the handling, extra grip and look of the 20s make them by far the superior rim in my view. you were lucky there mate, nice to hear it.

I can understand why some prefer the aesthetics of the 20s. But for me, I don't want to make my RRS look like a hot hatch. It's supposed to look like an off roader - so, IMHO, the 19s look more the part.

I think there is a BIG difference between the ride of the 19s and the 20s. I drove two demonstrators - to see whether I wanted a petrol or a diesel. One had 19s the other 20s and I didn't like the choppier ride of the 20s. There is a distinct difference. As far more grip - the 19s have enough. If I had wanted more I would have got that M3 that I tested. I have a two hour round trip commute and need comfort. I think the 19s give you more of that.

The wife made a comment that the 20s looked a bit 'boy racer'. An image I left behind 20 years ago. To me, the RRS is a tasteful machine but can start to look a little 'footballer' in image if too many little 'upgrades' are added. I think the 20s are the start of that.

If you're thinking of a buying a RRS for the first time, and CAN test the two tyre sizes back-to-back, I'd recommend that you do so.

It's a personal opinion, but I prefer the look and ride of my 19s. I've been mad for flipping years, absolutely years, over the edge for yonks.

Don't wanna go off topic, but you're wrong about the boobies size thing (are there any women on this forum I wonder).

It's all about presentation and the style and grace of the person they are attached to ....... and very, very little about size. I've been mad for flipping years, absolutely years, over the edge for yonks.

got to agree on size, if you want comfort and the ability to use your vehicle without fear of damaging it off road you have got to go for the 19". If you want it to look like a sportscar then the 20's are for you, just make sure you steer wide near any kerbs...

If you want real comfort get the 18" wheels with 55 or 60 profile tyres, but then there are certain RRS vehicles that these won't fit due to clearance issues.

If you have come from a sportscar with low profiles to RRS ownership I doubt you would notice the difference. But most of us who have owned several RR's and gone up in rim size will agree that there is less comfort with the larger rims, also accompanied by banging of the suspension on rough roads. However, the handling and turn in on larger rims is sightly better. You pay your money and make your choice depending on what you want to use the car for...

and this is an unbiased post as I own more than one RR and can give an honest opinion as I have got the benefit of driving with both large and small rims!

Going from 19's to 20's on a non DR equipped car such as ours, there IS a big difference in ride quality.

I have a drive in Jay's TDV6 on 20's WITH DR fitted and it was noticably smoother than mine. Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad
