It's not... definitely says in the handbook. In fact, I don't think most modern diesel engines would take it very easily.

The reason manufacturers state that bio-diesel should not be use in their vehicles, is because most of it tends to be home made and there's no "standard" as there is with hydrocarbon fuels.
However, if you are careful and diligent, then you can make fuel which will equal or beat industry standards. There are test kits that can be used to verify this.
I have run the Defender on my own bio diesel for several months now, and it works just fine. It is a 200TDi engine from a 1990 vehicle.
Interestingly, I have been running my partners 2005 Renault Grand Scenic on it and it thrives on the stuff. It's quieter, smoother and we get better fuel consumption from the bio diesel. We've achieved 53mpg journeys up to Luton airport and back - not bad for a 1.9TDi, 7 seater full of luggage.
My costs are about 20p/liter, and although fuel prices have come down lately, it's still a good saving.
Personally, I would not hesitate to run a RRS on bio diesel (provided the manufacturers waranty was up!)
