What RRS?

Hello, first time here, posted in the 'hello' section but hoping to glean some experienced advice here.

Basically I was wanting to buy an X5 for the last 2 years, but having fully reserched them and now driven one I am totally swayed by the looks of the RRS Smile

However, I knew what type of X5 to get and what to avoid and look out for but the RRS is completely new to me and I was hoping the experienced users here could guide me on what model of RRS to buy second hand, how old or new to go, what to watch out for or avoid and what I would expect to pay for say an 06 or 07 plate?

No doubt this has been asked a zillion times and I apologise for repeating it, but short of trawling through a thousand posts that might be out of date I was hoping for bang up to date info especially in these tight times.

Thanks Clones are people two

Welcome. You have 3 options.
a. TDV6 diesel - sluggish but a good car.
b. TDV8 diesel - loads of power and a great car to drive.
c. Supercharged petrol - a little faster than the TDV8 but with nearly 1/2 the fuel economy.

Both b&c only come in the HSE specification which offers all the toys. Option a. is available in S, SE & HSE and a few variants.

If I was buying an 07 car it'll be the TDV8 but if I did very little mileage I would consider a Supercharged as the performance is great. Expect to pay about £30k for an early TDV8 or a lot less for an older supercharged, early 05 plate SC can be picked up for around the £20k mark.

Don't buy the HST variant as only wide boys drive those. Wink 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

Bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question..... Confused

May help if you could give some idea of budget, fuel type preferred and even if you plan to use it off road...........

Also feel free to checkout the forum sponsors, they will be happy to help with any enquiries but I suspect will want at least the answers to the above. Smile

1. Petrol or diesel?

Basically your choice will be the 4.2 V8 S/C which goes and sounds amazing but will cost you at the pumps or the TDV8 which is a truly amazing diesel and has loads of power, great noise and will give you a realistic 25mpg. The TDV6 is a great engine and more refined than just about every other diesel out there (except TDV8!) however your mpg will be barely better than the TDV8 and it does lack power.

2. Spec level?

S/C comes as a stand alone spec level, also available as a HST (Sporty bodykit, different front grille, rear bumper and pipes) where as you can get the TDV8 as HSE or HST. The TDV6 is available as HSE, SE or S as well as a few specials along the way such as XS.

3. How old to go?

Well budget will dictate but as an example my 06/06 TDV6 HSE with 34k and a few extras is probably worth around 22k?

S/C models depreciate heavier due to the percieved unpopularity over real worl mpg although they are damn popular here!!!! Laughing

Obviously, buy the newest you can afford and preferably in warranty as potential repair bills on something like the RRS could be eye popping! Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Excellent info to start chaps, thank you.

Maybe I can answer some of these questions to help you help me.

Petrol or Diesel- probably diesel as long as it doesnt sound like a tractor when idling. But Petrol if it makes a big price difference?
Budget- up to £30,000 but rather spend less
Style- I'm no boy racer or showoff so classy as opposed to wide boy
off road- no apart from holidays in the highlands
colour- black, silver or dark blue

I knew that an 07 X5 3.0 Diesel was the earliest you would go as BMW made major improvements.
Was there similar things happening with the RRS that a year or model should be avoided? Clones are people two

There is also a 4.4iV8 which was available up to 2007MY but wasn't very popular in the UK and the fuel consumption was not a lot less than the S/C but the get up and go was considerably less. The 4.4V8 is a BMW engine and now is only available for export markets. There have been minor spec upgrades since 2005 but no major facelift has happened yet so there is no model year to avoid as such. I think the only thing I can think of to avoid is the colour Maya Gold, I think you will have problems finding , that's how unpopular it was!
For 30k take a look at the Land Rover website approved used cars, that will give you a good idea what is available and what your money will get you. You could also contact the 3 forum sponsors who are dealers.
In the colours you state there will be a huge selection of Black RRS's, it is by far the most popular colour, but there is Buckingham Blue, Lugano Teal (looks very very dark blue but is blue/green depending on the light) and Zermatt or Zambesi Silvers. RRS looks good in white with privacy glass, less Drug dealer than Java Black

cherokee1111, trust me neither of the diesels sound like any other diesel you will have heard before, excellent refinement in both especially if you currently have a Cherokee per chance... Whistle Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Not true: The 4.4 is the naturally aspirated version of the 4.2 Supercharged engine: It was increased in capacity for Land Rover use (it is 4.2 in Jaguar applications). It is a properly modern engine with VVT, alloy block, etc. but was dropped from the UK line-up when the TDV8 was launched in late 2006. It is the main engine in petrol markets (Gulf, USA, RoW) and is by no means out of date or anything and is arguably the most refined engine of the lot - less aggressive than the S/C, no turbo lag compared to a diesel, and very quiet and smooth. Don't dismiss it until you've tried it as they are very cheap in the UK and you may well save more than enough in cost than you will ever spend on fuel in a TDV8!

As far as spec is concerned SE / HSE are the only ones with Sat Nav at the age you are looking at and with your budget I would go HSE for all the toys.
