Surrey RFU couldn't organise a drink in a brewery

On Sunday my son was playing in an under 12 rugby tournament, a fairly important one because the results dictate which league the boys will play in next year when they are classified as juniors. Play was due to start at 10.00am but due to the fact that no one knew who should be playing who and that the draw hadn't actually been made play didn't start until 12.00pm - 2 hours late. My son's team was in a mini league of 3 teams - this was a feature that proved to be a major problem. The organisers in their wisdom had decided that there would be 5 groups with the winners of the groups playing in the semi final - yes 5 teams for 4 places!!!! We did point this problem out to the organisers but were assured that the situation would be sorted. We asked what the qualifying rules would be but again were told these havn't been decided yet, a recipe for disaster.

My son's team won both their pool games and we assumed we would be in the semi final - silly me because that is not what happened. After waiting around for 2 further hours ready for the semis we were told we were eliminated because we hadn't won as many matches as the other teams! Sorry how can that be? Well 3 of the groups had 4 teams in and the other group had the same number as us - 3. The team in the other group of 3 had had one massive victory whilst 2 of the other teams in the 4 team group had won 3 matches. The remaining team in the 4 team group had drawn one match so in percentage terms had a less than 100% record yet my son's team was deemed to be weaker.

My son's team had been working towards this tournament all season knowing the importance of the result - we believed we had a very good chance of winning but we never had a chance due to the idiots at Surrey RFU.

We finally left the rugby ground at 4.00pm after playing just 2 matches in 6 hours!

Shame on Surrey RFU for organising a farce of a competition and I know Land Rover have previously been a sponsor of this event - my advise to Land Rover is never go anywhere near Surrey RFU as they couldn't organise anything that would place your product in a good light!

That farcical structure smells like it was designed to favour teams other than those in a group of three.

Do the organisers have any relatives in any of the other competing teams perchance? Depending on how strongly you feel about this it is easily contested if what you say is true! Might be worth challenging the adjudication criteria for progression to the semi's. You could also question whay anyone in a group of three would bother competing if a 100% win rate is not going to be sufficient to progress.

I would be fuming!

All the 5 winning teams agreed that the situation was a farce and are all going to send official club letters to Surrey RFU complaining about the organisation of the day. My son's club will follow this up but the damage has been done and the morale of the team has been hit hard!

If we knew that simply by being in a group of 3 we would need to score huge amount of points we would have played a different game. We suggested that the 2 winners from the groups of 3 played a play off to see who would play in the semis but this idea was rejected. I smell a rat but not from any of the other teams involved in this farce. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
