smoke + underpower

HI TO ALL. IM A NEW MEMBER 2 THE SITE. I NEED SOME ADVICE OR HELP. I HAVE A RR SPORT TDV6. WHICH IS BECOMING A NIGHTMARE FOR ME. FEW WEEKS AGO PROBLEM STARTED ON THE CAR WHERE IT WAS STRUGGLING 2 GO OVER 2000 REVS AND GIVING CLOUD OF BLACK SMOKE. TOOK IT 2 JAMESON 4X4 (SPECIALIST) WHO ARE LOCAL 2 ME. THEY KEPT IT FOR 2 WEEKS AND STILL COULDNT FIGURE THE PROBLEM. THEY CHECKED FOR SENSORS, TURBO, FILTERS ETC AND ALL WAS O.K. SO THEY BLOCKED THE EGR VALVE FOR ME FOR TEMPORARY. THE POWER CAME BACK BUT SMOKE STILL THERE. SO THEY BLAMED THE REMAP WHICH I HAD REMOVED THE NEXT DAY STILL MADE NO DIFFERENCE. SO SOMEONE TOLD ME 2 TRY JE ENGINEERING IN COVENTRY WHICH I DID FEW DAYS AGO. WENT 2 THEM STRAIGHT AWAY THEY PICKED OUT THAT THE EGR HAS BEEN BLOCKED BY A TWO PENCE COIN WHICH I WAS SHOCKED MYSELF. THEY DONE A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK AND PICKED OUT THE EGR AND TOLD ME IT WAS KNACKERED ONCE THATS SORTED SMOKE WILL GO AWAY. SO 2DAY THEY FITTED EGR VALVE AND FONED ME 2 SAY SMOKE STILL THERE AND NOW THEY RECKON ITS THE TURBO. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK HOME AND ITS WORSER THEN B4 I GAVE IT 2 THEM. THERE IS HARDLY ANY POWER AND SMOKE GONE ALOT WORSER. I KNOW ITS A LONG STORY BUT I COULD REALY DO WITH SOME HELP. IM CONFUSED. DONT WANA GET THE TURBO DONE AND IF THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. THEY HAVE QUOTED 1400 + VAT FOR NEW SUPPLY & FIT. ANY HELP WOULD B GREAT THANKS. "LIVING IT LARGE"

Those symptoms indicate the turbo, blown intercooler hose or the EGRs. Since you say the EGRs have been changed, that points to the turbo or intercooler hose. The hose is easy to check and i assume your mechanics would have done so. Quite a few members of www.disco3.co.uk have had turbo failure (same engine) but none have had to pay £1400......

It is a known problem on the older TDV6s and the turbo has been redesigned about 5-6 times.

Is the car still in warranty?

thanks leo for the reply. No warranty has just expired in christmas time. I have tried several times to extend it. They just tel me they will fone me back which they never do. So il have a look at the intercooler hose. So after this u think the next step is the turbo. "LIVING IT LARGE"

yeh they are two of these. When they checked it they told me 1 was fine nd the 1 on the right was knackerd. Problem is i spent £388 yestrday 2 get 1 replaced £135 for the part rest was 3 hours labour which i thougt was a bit too steep. But they hav tld me other 1 is fine. Iv drove it 2 work this morning it has been fine on cold start very little smoke nd ther is lot more power. But half hour later same thing again. "LIVING IT LARGE"

Did you ask for the fault codes when they dignosed your car?

The best thing to do to the EGRs is get them blanked off - Bell Auto Services (check advert at the top of this page) can do this for you, or sell you a kit to do it yourself.

Another thing to check is if the intercooler pipe has collapsed from inside.

I've sent you a PM!

Intercooler hoses are notorious for collapsing and being 'sucked in' on themselves.....I had an audi tt that had this problem but it took them 6 months to finally diagnose the fault...would only happen when car was very hot...so 5 mins round the block 'road test' will not find the problem....usually happened after 20-30 mins dual carriageway 'thrash'....

It's never a bad idea to change the hoses every 2-3 years as they are exposed not only to engine heat but atmospheric conditions that will attack the rubber.

had the car checked out again 2day by je engineering. They have picked up 3 fault codes on the diagnostic. 1. P029e= injector 2 is down (fuel trim at max limit). 2. P121a= inj balance, one cylinder restricted. 3. P0299= turbo under boost. They took the car for road test. Put it back 2 original settings. The turbo seems fine when u drive. Just shows fault on computer. They hav now suspected the intercooler might hav a hole in there bcuz they found oil in middle of core. So advised me 2 change dat first. To c if the blak smoke clears or not. Has any1 experienced dis and any suggestions please!. "LIVING IT LARGE"

yeh sorry to get back late. finally had the car sorted it turned out to be the intercooler rather then the turbo. it had a crack and was full of oil. had it remapped from them aswel. although it set me back nearly £800 Very Happy it drives really awesome now. im really happy with it if it stays that way. Very Happy Razz Smile "LIVING IT LARGE"
