Is there in UK a site/organisation which I can approach to find out whether a company (any) really exists and is VAT payer?

Companies House will help but it will not list self employed people. Contact the VAT office and quote their VAT number to find out if VAT is legitimate. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
