I redeemed my mortgage last October and yesterday I got a letter from the A&L/Santander saying
"...Alliance and Leicester plc cannot deal with the discharge of the mortgage. Scottish Law specifically requires the discharge to be dealt with by a solicitor. The Discharge will need to be drawn up by your solicitor and submitted to us at the address above for sealing and return"

So this involves a couple of hundred quid in legal fees and a visit to the solicitor. What is the situation in England? In Scotland I know that conveyancing MUST be handled by a solicitor as your house is hertitable property. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
