Jay - In this project I have all the LED's controlled via a Clipsal lighting system - basically a simple light switch to turn them on/off/dimmer etc - colour changing is then controlled via a wall panel or via the TV automation system. However they can be controlled by remote controls also.

We are also playing with some very trick outdoor lights - completely portable RGB lights with built in battery and comms between each unit. Just place 5 out in the garden and then control them all together or make them dance to music. Would go very well in a car showroom

Kaine looks very I am building my house in Tropical Queensland in the next few months (optimistic at the current snails pace of the architect and prospective builder), and was wondering what the rough rule of thumb was of LED based lighting vs conventional down lighters would be in terms of installation costs and running..

In Queensland on new builds they have a policy of 40% of lighted area's must use energy efficient systems .. so anything that could move it away from fluorescent would be nice to know about.. Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

Zilch - to be honest, LED lights are not cost effective at all, however from an Energy perspective they are excellent. The key with LED light is to be efficient with the available light, making sure you use reflective surfaces to the maximum and finally being aware the overal effect is quite different to conventional lighting.

One way I explain this is to ask you to look around a room with conventional lighting and make note of all the areas in the room which is lit and more specifically overly lit - this is basically wasted light/energy. With LED's you can basically omit the wasted light and just have the 'useful' light.

This pic below shows some Warm LED's stips sunk into ceiling recesses - it runs at approx 4W/metre and all of the light is directed down. In this corridor the client specifically wanted full length strips of light so compared to T5's we have saved approx 40% energy output (plus extended the lifetime)

In case of downlighters, it is possible to replace conventional 35W GU10/MR16 with a 5W LED versions in Reception rooms as normally you will have supporting light in there in the form of 5A Lamps etc. However in case of a 'bright room' (i.e. Kitchen) or a room with dark tiles (Ensuites etc) then increase the qty may be a good idea to avoid 'dark spots' however in case of Reception rooms.

In case of pay back periods for LED's, I have completed a full detailed analysis for this current project and its coming out at 11year payback. Another consideration for LED lighting is the option to run them direct on 12V/24C DC supplies - i.e. run them direct from Solar Panels / Wind Turbines etc without using step up transformers and getting losses.

Well i am in it for the long haul, it is going to be the retirement home and as it is a tropical area with lots of Sun, but prone to Cyclone and other forms of natural disasters, Solar is not really out of the question at the moment.. all worth considering.. Trouble with Solar, it in itself takes about 13 years pay back down here at the moment..

Can you also do an installation that lets you control all the lights with one of those flashy touch-screen remotes with no keys at all so that you don't have any switch on the wall, just some of the touch screen panels?
