Unwitting motorists face £1,000 fines from D.V.L.A

Copied from Disco3.co.uk - thanks to pugwash.

Ladies & Gents it might be worth checking you licences, They don't last long anymore.and not only could you be fined but your insurance etc will be invalid.

Thousands of motorists risk being fined up to £1,000 because they are unwittingly driving without a valid licence. They have failed to spot that their photocard licence automatically expires after ten years and has to be renewed.

Motoring organisations said most drivers believed, wrongly, that their new-style licence was for life and blamed the Government for the fiasco.

A mock-up driving licence from 1998 when the photocards were launched shows the imminent expiry date as item '4b'

DVLA figures reveal that while 16,136 expired this summer, so far only 11,566 drivers have renewed, leaving 4,570 outstanding.

With another 300,000 photocard licences due to expire over the coming year.

ummm, not exactly... you get a letter from the DVLA warning you your licence is about to expire. RRS First Edition S/C, Vesuvius Orange, Rear Entertainment, Alpine TUE-T200DV, Stormer Alloys. (+ 19" MTR's for playing in the snow!)

Take the cheap option - I don't have a photo driving licence/ National ID card on the sly. Tried to apply for one but they couldn't tell me how long it would take and they needed my passport or birth certificate, both of which I have to take to sea with me! So I still have the old pink A4 sheet version in 15 EU languages and without a photo on it! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

You should also have the paper counterpart which is valid from date of issue for 47 years, so even if you get pulled on your picture id licence you are still valid on the paper portion.

The Driving Standards Agency is allowing L-test candidates with out-of-date photo card licences to sit their driving tests as long as they provide a valid passport. This concession will end in January 2009, raising the prospect that some L-test candidates will be turned away.

The DVLA said no one had so far been charged with failing to surrender a licence.

Hows that then, If they are not insured they are not insured.

I'm sure that somewhere recently it said you were insured as you had not lost your entitlement to drive, just your photo id was out of date, will try to find it later

IIRC you have to have the paper one, it isn't a requirement (yet!) to have the photo licence. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
