First thoughts are a split turbo hose. I think this would explain most of the faults mentioned, but I'm no mechanic so dn't take my word as gospel.

Sounds like an EGR valve has gone faulty / sticking, becoming quite a common problem as they get sooted up with horrible black gunge..Take it to the dealer to see what fault codes are showing. Will probably need to replace one or both egr valves. RRS TDV8 Buck Blue (no, not now in my dreams). ..........D3 TDclankety clankV6 ............BMW 318i |

I'd go with the EGR value too. My D3 had exactly the same symptoms on Thursday.
