Phone Contract due for renewal - is 3G worth looking at?

OK I've been with O2 since god was a boy and have never even thought about using another provider as I get good service and coverage out of them, however I fancy going over to a 3G phone and wonder what folks experiences of 3G are - is it work the extra cost and what is overseas coverage like as that is more important to me than UK coverage.
Basically I want to be able to collect and send emails and make phone calls, I'm not interested in downloading music or surfing the net.
Options are go for an iPhone3G or to subscribe to a 3G dongle for my lap top - is the iphone as good as it's cracked up to be and is it worth the extra money on my tariff (O2 select 100).
I currently have a Motorola V3i and a Blackberry Pearl (which I use only as a phone as I cannot be a Censored d to set it up for push emails!) 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Tim,

Unless you are a BIG data user, it is pointless. The 3G element does not impact the ability for calls (unless video) so most of the traffic through use of a 3G phone will still use the 2.5G GSM networks that we all love and have used for a number of years now.

If you are looking to surf for filthy images and videos, its a must....if not, stick with a 2G phone.....it will be better for battery life and be more reliable in my experience.

I am less than 1km from my local Mast that is enabled to the fast data speeds, I struggled to maintain a connection for longer than 20mins and in the main its was switching back to normal sub 1mb speeds for data, so i'd say until they fill the network out a bit it might not be worth your while. I have a SE W850i which is 3G and its honestly a bit pointless (for me).

NP, BT Fon is WiFi so no use to me on the ship where we are usually miles from the nearest building, certainly not closer than 30m unless something goes very very wrong............................ Except in the port of Rotterdam where the Maersk Terminal we use is the first in the world to have Broadband wifi connections on the terminal for free use by ship's crew.
