Brake Pads!!!

Hi guys, been a while since I've posted, thought I might pop a question out there..

Was driving back home earlier when all of a sudden a warning light came on the dash: Check brake pads!!

Now, i've only done about 14k kms (around 8.5k miles), so surely this can't really be the case?? I thought they were changed only after about 40k kms?

I'm sure some of you have encountered this before? If so, any tips before I bring it in to the stealers tomorrow?

ps. No, I don't drive around like a loonytoon out on a qualifying lap, so im sure i cant blame myself for this Whistle

ps. ps. apologies if this has been discussed before (most probably many times before... damn brembos!!!)

Have a read of this thread mate..
MAy be a different issue but may be the same thing, as you've done way too less miles to need brakes changing..

I had my Supercharged for 32,000 miles and didn't need to replace the brakes.

I have had my FFRR now for 14 months and 25,000 miles and am about to replace all pads and the front discs. The rear pads though were replaced under warranty last September and they are allready 75% worn. That almost makes a new set of pads every calendar year! OUCH!

Mind you, at least I can get the whole job done including parts for £200, bet you can't do that with a Sport! Very Happy

One day, I will learn how to do these myself, I used to do it on my Series 3, these should be easier as they don't have tricky to set up drum brakes. L319 D4 HSE

I did the rear pads on my sport a few weeks ago. EBC "Green Stuff" pads cost £43, new sensor cable cost £11. Did the work myself, and complimented on my workmanship when car went in for service. Took about an hour (including time sat staring at it). Gonna do the front ones (Brembos) in the next few weeks.

Aargh, 200 Dinars for 4 new pads (around £265 to the laymans).. apparently they are all worn Question , couldn't be bothered to argue over the phone so told them to proceed.. It's the weekend coming and I need my RRS!

And they're going to clean up the discs again f.o.c. to reduce the squeeling (which will no doubt be audible again after about 5 minutes of driving)..

Through thick and thin i say..

oh by the way, was chatting with the mechanic and he had a pretty plausible reason for the squeeling. Ready?

He mentioned that previously, brake pads were made partly of asbestos. The companies then swapped it with some metal elements instead (as asbestos is dangerous etc). When driven, these metal flakes eventually gather together and when the pad is sufficiently worn, it makes contact with the disc, hence the noise. It is basically unavoidable.

Aaaaand, he had a possible solution: Get cross-drilled or slotted discs. Apparently this would cure the problem.. Sounds like he should be working with Brembo!

Ok rant over Razz
