I'm off to do some of the Austrian/Swiss passes later this week. Am I right in assuming I do not need European Breakdown Insurance and that Land Rover Assistance would either repair the car or cover the cost to transport it back to my own dealer? I would assume if there was an accident, your insurance company would tell you where to take it and LR would recover it to that point.

Ensure your insurance company is aware of your plans, and that you have all the legal requirements for any of the countries you pass through (First aid kit, warning triangle, dayglow vests, spare bulb kit etc.)

LR assistance is normally valid for one year only. Check with your dealer.

Make sure you carry a Green Card - proof of insurance. You insurance provider will be able to provide, some charge an admin fee of £15 or more. Also, you will have to ensure you have you driving licence with you. If stopped by the police in Germany and you cannot show it, you will be fined. I know - I live here.

Some countries also recommend you have a fire extinguisher fitted in your car.

If travelling through Belgium/Holland - watch your speed. Fines can be hefty. If caught and cannot pay on the spot, they will take you to the nearest bank for the cash.

You could also take your car along to your LR dealer and have them flatten the beam (legal to drive on the continent) - only takes about 30 mins. This will save you fitting tape to your headlights.

Make sure that the reflective vests are within reach of all the occupants before they get out of the car as they will fine you if you have stuck them in the roof-box.

You need a vignette for Austria that can be purchased at garages in Germany. Do not get caught without it as they fine you. Look at the back of the vignette and it will tell you whereabouts on your windscreen you can stick it. (Put it anywhere else and they will fine you)

If you cannot pay the fine on the spot, many of the autobahn police have credit card machines and failing that they will take you to the cashpoint to get the money BUT they leave you there and do not take you back to your car
