I run Spyware Doctor and Spybot, both are very good and came as recommendations from members on RRSport.co.uk a couple of years ago. If you subscribe (I do) then they both do automatic updates every couple of days.

Spybot Search and Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Spyware Doctor - http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/?ref=afl_nenextech 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Spybot's pretty good as is AdAware - but in my experience there's no one tool that does everything excellently so worth having a couple of spyware tools on hand. Personally, I use Norton AV (corporate edition, which I appreciate not everyone will be able to get their hands on), Windows Defender (which seems to pick up a fair amount of stuff) and then use Spybot for adhoc scans. I haven't suffered a compromise in years.

I have the Norton Internet Security Suite running at full wack, I also have Windows defender, both of these picked up nothing after 4 hours a full scans Shocked

spyware terminator as recomended above found 407 Shocked Shocked , but everything was 1* with one 2* threat which looked to be some sort of websearch toolbar.

Deleted them all anyway

If people didn't have to install all these search toolbars and browser plugins, half the picked up threats would go away anyway. One of the reasons my PCs and laptops are all so clean is that I don't install crap or visit dodgy sites (well apart from this one obviously).
