Anybody old enough to remember The Prisoner?

Just been listening to a fascinating programme on BBC Radio4 about the gestation and production of the programme - very interesting to hear how they made some of the props and stunts for a fraction of the cost of doing them for a James Bond movie. Patrick McGoohan is 80 today!

You can hear the programme here http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml and look for the programme "Britain in a box" that was broadcast at 13:30 today.

There were only 17 episodes. It was a really weird series and now terribly dated, all filmed at Porthmerrion in Wales. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I watched it second time around. On Bravo or E4 or something. Look out for the bouncy ball! Shocked

Totally cool and off the wall. Never managed to watch all the episodes... Captured the changing mood of the nation and set the Lotus 7 (now Caterham) as one of the world's iconic cars.

Word is of a movie remake. Patrick's having none of it. He's way too cool for that. 2022 P440e AB

The bouncy ball was called "The Rover", they also drove round in rather cool mini-mokes! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

From wikipedia...

Rover is a fictional entity from the 1967 British television program The Prisoner. It was largely responsible for the security of The Village, a prison for former intelligence agents. Rover was a large white ball that could bounce and glide across the land. It was summoned by the authorities of The Village whenever a prisoner appeared to be escaping, or otherwise needed discipline. It would emerge from the waters surrounding The Village, or sometimes from a fountain in the main square of The Village.

Rover appeared to have some sense of intelligence, and was capable of stunning or killing escapees, presumably by means of suffocation. Through unexplained means Rover would constantly produce a bleeping sound, and was occasionally capable of roaring. Its origin and physical construction were never explained in the television series, although in real life it was a weather balloon that was dragged across the set with wires. Rover was only named onscreen in one episode, "The Schizoid Man." However, the name appears throughout the scripts. In the novel The Prisoner: Number Two by David McDaniel, based upon the series, the name Guardian was used instead of Rover.

Rover was originally supposed to have been a robotic, wheeled device with a siren. It resembled a circular inflatable swimming pool topped with a checker-pattern dome. Although a prop was constructed,[1] it did not work properly, and sank in the waters off Portmeirion during the initial stages of filming. The more familiar version of Rover was inspired by a weather balloon seen above Portmeirion by Patrick McGoohan.

Rover has become an icon of the series, and has been referenced numerous times in popular culture, such as in the Simpsons episodes "The Joy of Sect" and "The Computer Wore Menace Shoes."

Apparently it has as huge following - odd for a series that only lasted for 17 episodes - but now it has cult status! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

It was just before my time.... never remember watching any of the repeats, but you're right it does have massive following. Fawlty Towers only lasted 12 episodes I think and look at the following that has.
