Be aware...Space saver spare wheel and Transmission problems

Hi All

Apologies if this information is posted somewhere else on the site but I couldn't find it so thought I'd pass on something I stumbled across yesterday.

After an unfortunate misunderstanding between my front tyre and a metal spike I was forced to use the space saver spare tyre. After fitting the tyre the Auto transmission would only go up to 3rd gear and then stop changing up. If I manually took control of the gears it worked fine and went all the way up to 6th.

Fearing the worst I got the car into the dealer (who didn't believe what I was telling them until they took it for a test drive). They called LR to be told that the space saver wheel / tyre is a different circumference to the normal wheels and tyres and that this was upsetting the transmission ecu. Dealer fitted a normal sport wheel and did another road test. Hey Presto! everything works fine.....

Please bear in mind if you ave to resort to the horrible biscuit spare tyre....

Yep, you only used to get a 19" spare even if your car had 20s from the factory not sure if that's still the case.

It is as my car has not only a 19" space saver, but it is black! It thought that you were only supposed to be able to drive for 50 miles and at 50mph on a space saver - which would be another reason why the car wouldn't go into 6th as well! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

The space saver is a pain - do as I have done and buy a full size spare from ebay. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Yeh that's fine if your normal tyre is a 19", but a 20" spare has to travel in the boot or on the roof as it won't fit in the spare stowage well under the car! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I thought it has been proven that a 20 inch does fit below. I stand to be corrected. I have a 19 with an MTR on which is larger than your normal tyres and that fits. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

I will have to check then VA, I haven't tried I must admit - I don't have a spare 20" lying around to do the test! I'm just going on what I was told. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I too thought a 20" spare wouldn't fit in the well, but again never tried it.

Actualy the 19" space saver is GREATER in diameter than the 20" with the conti. I measured them up back when I was getting the 19" with the MTRs on and the 255/55 R19 MT/R is 30mm bigger in diameter than the 275/40 R20 conti and it fits in the spare wheel well no problem, it is what is on the car at the moment.
Edit:
Also I noticed on the load rating for the black "space saver" that it was rated to a higher weight than the 20" 10 spokes that LR put on the car.
Just checked what is in the garage
Black sace saver Max load 940kg 255/50 R19 cross contact 73cm dia
5 V spoke 19" Max load 900kg 255/55 R19 MT/R 78cm dia Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh
