OK Gents help and advice required.

I have finally convinced Mrs TB that a small investment in a new set of off road boots for the RRS is a good idea.

I've still got my old 19" alloys in the back of the garage so ideally would be looking for a set of tyres to fit these. However, I've just been browsing Ebay and have stumbled across a set of 18" alloys which are still at quite a low price and are pretty close to home so easily collected.

My main questions are:

What size and make of tyre should I go for 19" or 18"?

How much should I be looking to spend? I was quoted £170 a corner for 19" Goodyear MTR's earlier today. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.

Go for the MTRs mate. £170 is an okish price at the moment as they are hard to get hold of. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

The MTR's are on back order.

I have to pay a deposit before the tyre shop will place an order, then sit back and wait until they turn up.

I was hoping someone could come up with an alternative that would be easier to get hold of. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.

How about these - you'd need an 18" wheel though - BFG T/A KO 265/65R18.

Most of us have purchased the SE Standard 18" wheel, rather than importing the MTR for obvious reasons. One member has imported those bowler wheels...very nice!

The 18's will take a 285/60/18, which is the best choice in size due to prevent any rubbing under full compression (I can see the derailing coming right around the corner here...ha ha), and the best tire choices are either a Nitto Terra Grappler, or Cooper LTZ...plenty of us are running them here in the US...slightly better reviews for the Cooper. Both have aggressive tread patterns, Coopers apparently are a tad stickier and quieter on road, however both are very quiet. Great in deep sand, mud, snow, rock climbing and general bouldering...

BFG ATs were the best set of tyres I put on my old freelander and disco when I lived in the UK... then they really did me proud living in the freezer that was Norway..... just wish they made them to fit my stormers  Brit across the Pond

Wouldn't things be a lot easier if there weren't so many different options when it comes to off road wheels and tyres.

I had almost sold myself on the idea of buying 18" rims from ebay and then dressing them in the BFG's, but this works out at almost the same price as going for the MTR's and then I've still got the hassle of getting rid of the old 19" wheels.

TB, I seem to remember the HOTL LR's run on standard wheels which on the RRS were the 19's?

In which case you have to ask yourself are you planning anything more extreme than that off road course? If not then a set of 19's would serve you well, you already have the wheels so save the hassle of buying new wheels and selling the others and use the ones you have.

06 RRS TDV6 HSE, Java/Ebony, PTI, Running Boards, Privacy, S/C Grille/Vents, Stormers, Tasmods - GONE - (

why not spend £2k on a 200tdi Discovery or £3k on a similar vintage Defender, then happily thrash them in the deepest bog, rockiest track, tight packed forest etc etc - knowing that the inevitable bumps and bangs will simply add character rather than very expensive repairs. After you have had your fun, you will be able to sell the older Landy on at little depreciation, safe in the knowledge that your Rangie has kept its onroad performace, looks and value at a suitably high level.

Or should I just get my coat ...............

The standard tyre will take you 95% of where the MTR will and maybe 100% of where your courage will, but the tyre walls are soft, it doesn't matter at man made places like HOTL but if you start doing more trips you will end up damaging tyres. I ripped the walls on 2 tyres on Salisbury last year despite being very aware of the potential damage. If you have a set of 19" I'd put the MTRs on and forget about trying to sell wheels no one wants to buy. Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

Pelyma, I agree totally about the standard tyres. I've been playing at Yarwell all day today and the motor performed brilliantly. There was only one bank I failed to climb and that was because I grounded myself due to the deep ruts. Apart from that everything was great. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE.
