Some idea of how much trade China does

This little piece is in one of the shipping trade e-zines that I receive from my company

Quote:
The 100 millionth box at all ocean container terminals in China this year was handled at the end of November in Tianjin. The abacus estimates to have to count some 117 million TEU by the last day of 2007.

A TEU is a standard 20ft container. Now to put this into perspective all the ports in Europe only handled 40 million TEUs among them.............................. OK so the figure also includes empty units being returned for refilling but 117,000,000 is a hell of an impressive number of containers to handle. My current ship can carry 10,000 units at one lift (which we haven't yet done - most any of the 8 sisterships has lifted in one cargo is 9500!) 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Shocked

I don't have any figures, but I won't be surprised if it's the same volume for imports. It seems China is like a black hole, sucking-in resources, especially commodities. That's why everything is getting expensive in the last few years. Oh, and let's not forget India too.
