Mystery phone call from eBay

I've just had an automated phone call from "eBay" giving me a verification number.................... Don't know why as I haven't bought or sold anything on ebay for nearly a year (never sold anything there ever!). The nice "lady" at the other end told me to log into ebay and type in my verification number.
Now here's a thing - eBay don't have my home phone number as I have never given it to them, they have my mobile number..................................... new scam? 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Hmm... doesn't sound right. If you do go ahead and login to Ebay is it obvious that you can do as she says?

It's not the typical email social engineering scams with a "click here" button that you might stupidly click... it's asking you to go to Ebay under your own steam Confused

If it is a scam, I'm interested to know how it's engineered.... with my techie hat on.

They phone you and advise you to go to Ebay, which they are presuming you will do. They would then have to have some pretty specific info about you and your internet connection to be able to hijack the request and redirect your request to connect to Ebay to a site of their own choosing (which is normally how these scams work, when you get them via email).

Did they give you a specific URL to go to and not simply ebay.co.uk?

Personally i'd contact ebay direct and tell them whats happened. It sounds like a scam but could just as easily be a mistake. Ebay will advise you what to do if it is a scam.
