Have been on several internet forums recently that have a button on their various subforums marked "RSS". It appears to be some sort of file synchronising function, can anybody explain what is does/ how it works? It's a way of publishing constantly updated data for people to subscribe to - like news tickers, weather reports etc in a lightweight form.

Martin used to run an RSS feed from this site too, but a) found it was underused and b) found that when it was used, it was the cause of a lot of performance problems....

Useful technology though
