When I first went there in 1976 there was only the Bahrain Slipway (now ASRY), a few coasters in the bay, an Aluminium smelter and the oil terminal. In Manama the Hilton Hotel used to be on the outskirts of town and now it is "downtown" because the town has grown so much. I spent 6 months on a ship anchored at Sitrah and we had every weekend to go ashore - it's one of the best voyages I have ever made.Haven't been back since 1992.
