LCD v Plasma - which is best imho

for those who may be interested, I have been benchtesting Plasma v LCD now for some time - the market direction is of course LCD (as the manufacturing margins are higher) however personally the image quality is key for me to date is poor so I've not been convinced.

This week I got hold of the latest LG 42 True HD 1080p LCD (42LY95) TV and I have been running a comparison.

Using both a Custom built Media Centre (XP MCE) with a Gigabyte Radeon 2600XT graphics card, a Toshi HD DVD Player and a standard Sky+ Pace box I did some pretty long testing comparing the LG against a Pana TH-42PS9 and a Pioneer 4270XD (both Plasma's)

Brief Conclusions;
1) When watching 1080p HD source (Lost Season 3 HD) all three screens performed comparably (even the Pana Non HD screen performed very well). The LG LCD's colour contrasts were stronger, however to be honest the Black contrast was not very good at all in dark scenes - the back light could actually be seen leaking from the corners too Confused . The LG also showed signs of blocking too however this could be the signal (although the same blocks didn't appear on the Plasma's)

2) When watching a standard HD (720p) DVD (Lord of the Rings - Fellowship) again all screens compared similarly with the same results as 1080p.

3) Sky+ (non HD, so normally a crap signal) - well, the LG LCD was pretty awful to be honest (so much so, my wife even commented how poor it was). The Pana performance was down too as normal, however on par with the LG display. The Pioneer however made a much better job at displaying poor Sky signals.

Only a quick summary, however my feeling is still if you go LCD then you need a HD signal to get the best from it - if you dont have HD, and want a big screen stick with Plasma until both the Beeb and Sky go all HD throughout (remember, all re-runs from both Sky and Beed pre HD will remain non HD and not perform aswel on LCD)

What about smaller screens, say 28" (we still have a 20" CRT Sony)

good question - the key issue here is you have no choice as the smallest Plasma now available is 42" (some 37" Pana's are still about on the market) however under 42" then its LCD or keep your CRT. The same problems exist for smaller LCD screens, however 'generally' they are less prominant as the pixel size is smaller. The key to smaller LCD screens is to buy the best you can afford as the cheaper units tend to have cheap tuners (Digi) and poor processors leaving the picture quality terrible.

I'll just stick to my HD(720p) DLP projector then for a while yet. The 118" (across not diagonal) screen in the bedroom is great for those long dark evenings with a good movie Whistle Thumbs Up

not actually got my hands on the 428 yet, however have a 427 at home at the moment, plus have fitted 5 others this year - they are imo the best screens on the market - I'm expecting the 428 to be as good/better.
Current best pricing is around 1378.99 ex.VAT - expect it to go down by around £50/month ish
