Numberplates.

Right, i have a personal plate on my car, but i bought that from DVLA so know the process of putting plates on/off cars.

I have been offered a car with a nice numberplate on it (would be good for me) but it wasn't cherished at the time, the car was registered in 1984 with the plate on it. They have the original V5 document with it on, and the last tax disc with the plate number showing dated 1996, the car has been rotting in a barn ever since.

Anyone know what would be the best procedure of going about getting this plate off the car. The car is scrap, so i would probably give it to the fire brigade or whoever would come and pick it up. However im not willing to hand over a wad of cash to later be told by the DVLA that the plate cannot be transferred off.

Its confused me slightly. The plate is KAM **. Its being offered at a good price, but how would this car have come registered with this plate on it?
A friend of ours once imported a jap car and put a cherished plate on it, 5 Y* and unfortunately lost the plate when he sold the car, as he had placed the plate on the car as its original UK plate therefore could not be transferred or something along those lines. Anyone know anything about this?

"Hi Kam,
The V5 document dated 1.2.84 has the registration mark Kam **. this was registered when we purchased the car [new on that date.] the last tax disc dated 1996 when we stored the car has the Kam ** in writing on it . hope this helps. regards Irene"

The car is a Mercedes Benz 500SEC 1984 model.

Dad's 110 was first registered with his private plate on it.

You should be fine to transfer the plate off as long as a new log book can be issued for the Merc with an age-related number - e.g. A789 ABC or whatever. Like this site? Buy some RRSPORT goodies to show your support!

Using the top search on http://www.rac.co.uk/web/carbuying/vehicle_status_checks with that number still shows it being a Merc, so it's not gone walkies elsewhere since 96 Smile Like this site? Buy some RRSPORT goodies to show your support!

Your best advice will come from DVLA - but if I remember correctly as my plate was like this of on old vintage car that was being restored - but the owner gave up. He had to take the car to his local DVLA ( on trailer ) for them to inspect it and check paperwork and ownership. But Im sure if you look at the DVLA website all the info is there.

Yep.. will get onto DVLA then..
only thing is.. i don't want to step anywhere near this smelly car, would basically arrange for someone to scrap it, and i would need the logbook and tax disc in my hand and all other documentation.
Need to delve further i think..
Thanks for your help guys.

Right, now the woman is saying, that the car had another original reg number, and they transferred KAM ** onto it, but all they have is the V5 and tax disc, correct me if im wrong but isn't this just a simple transfer then for £130 to another car of £85 to retention?

The lady is very nice and is offering all the info, she does want to sell it with the car though, believes its the quickest way of disposing of the old car which is pretty worthless considering its been in a shed for the last 10 years!!

My friend has just transferred the plate off his W reg rover 25 onto a new car, and he only needed to send off his V5 (in his name) and the application form for transfering plate. I think the car you're putting it onto has to have a valid tax disc and be registered etc. I am going to research this over the weekend and jump on it next week if its feasible. If its not, i don't think my parents would appreciate an old nail falling to pieces on the driveway!

Mine will have the private plate on it at first registration. I had bought it 11 months ago but didn't put it on come the end - just had to right off in order to pay for retention (£25 for a further 12 months) when it comes back I will drop it direct into the dealers.
They will then sort out the log book and tax before I take delivery........ Currently: Carbon Black 535d

I am really confused.. noone seems to know about this.. DVLA website and all other private sites don't actually answer this question directly.

I have spoken to a few people, and would be willing to insure the car, tax it and could get hold of an MOT for the car if needed (if i ask nicely enough)
but noone knows if the car you are transferring from actually needs this or not..

I have never transferred a plate from a car with none of these, and if i remember right, they ask for the tax disc serial number off your old car, and the logbook. I normally have this sorted by my dealer too!

I would keep my existing KAM plate on my RRS right now, and use this new one for when the RS4 arrives, and stick my old one on the family runaround or onto certificate.. I have squared it with all involved, and think i could buy the car and land it on my driveway for a short time, but i know it would start to Censored my parents off after a while if it was stuck there for ages.

Quite worried about this, as its quite a bit of outlay, but at the same time is a hell of a lot cheaper then what i think it would fetch at auction!! (will kick myself later if i missed it now) so hence i am willing to spend some money to get the car up to scratch for the transfer, but not thousands (which it would need - it was probably one of the most expensive cars one could buy in its day, i would have been 2 at the time so i can't remember obviously!)

Kam When ever I have tranfered a plate the DVLA have only ever asked for the tax disc and V5. It might be better and easier to get the presant owner to transfere it to a V778 Retention Certificate then you only have to change the Nominee details. The cost is £105 to get the certificate that includes all the fees but will cost an extra £25 to get you as Nomniee.
