Engine Noise TDV8

I purchased my new TDV8 after ejoying a test drive in my friends TDV6. It is a fantastic bit of kit BUT it is much noisier during acceleration and at rest than the TDV6 I drove prior to purchase. Do the engines get quieter as you put the miles on or is this a characteristic of the V8 engine.

Nah, its not Diesel Knock, what it is is 2 extra cylinders producing (together with the other 6) great big dollops of power and torque and thereby making their presence felt. The TDv8 is tuned (and the accompanying exhaust) to be more "viceral" than the relatively "mild" TDv6. The engine does ease off and you get used to its presence quite quickly, so in no time at all it is a very welcome and unmissable noise.... Thumbs Up RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

Thanks for the replies. It happens under only mild acceleration and is not so noticeable when the foot goes down. Just sounds a bit more agricultural than I was expecting but hope it 'smooths' out with miles.

Sorry aren't V8's supposed to sound like V8's Question

It's a very nice noise. If you don't like it put the boogy box on then you won't hear it. Alternatively I'm sure your mate will swop with you. TDV6 - gone

Guys it doesn't sound like a V8 - I have one of those in my XK. The noise sounds like an old fashioned diesel engine and is quite obtrusive within the car which is not what I expected. I thought it would sound like a V8 with a bit of diesel knock at tickover. I just wonder if there is something wrong with it and may take it to the dealer to check.

I always thought the TDV6 sounded a little bit tractory under load (although not as much as the TD4 in the Freelander etc) but I've heard the TDV8 myself and although it doesn't sound the same as a petrol V8 (obviously) it's far from agricultural. You sure it's actually got 8 cylinders? Wink

This could all be subjective of course - is this the first diesel car you've owned? If not, what are you comparing the sound of your diesel V8 with? Confused Maybe you could meet up with a another local TDV8 owner to compare noises - or you could just as easily do that at your dealer I suppose; get him to start up another TDV8 that they have there.

Goodness me those poor hard working LR engineers spent an awful lot of time and money using the latest state of the art equipment on tuning the exhaust to make the V8 Diesel sound as good as it does, and then you go and call it Agricultural. What ever next. Cool You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.
