Rolling Eyes Wink

I don't think the tinting legislation applies to the rear windscreen, just the sides and front.

Don't be a pratt Envoy - it's far too difficult to get a result if chasing those sort of people. Far easier to target you and me as we have insurance, pay tax etc. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

Having tints on front windows is infringing the Type approval regs and if a dealer has cars on the forecourt that are for sale with the tinting on them he is selling a vehicle that is illegal as it doesn't comply with the construction regs - I think that is how they get round that one VA. The thing that worries me is that if somebody who is driving round with heavily tinted front side windows hit's your car then they are actually driving uninsured................... so would you loose your no claims because they have hit you? Another good reason for driving round in day time with dipped headlights on all the time...................
Must admit that we don't see that many cars with them up here, probably because we don't need to hide from the rest of society like folks seem to have to in the south (it could also have something to do with the relative lack of sunshine....), but it always amazes me how many cars I see in London that have tinted front side windows 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I think Josh is on the right lines and the journalist has got a bit carried away. The law was changed following a fatal motorcycle accident where HEAVILY tinted windows were deemed to blame. The law recognises the difference between 'light window tints' (30%+ light transmission)and 'excessive' window tints... If you are stopped for having light tints you will be dealt with by having to remove the tint, usually within 10 days. Excessive tints, at worst will be prosecuted.. These guidelines have been agreed and recommended by the gov.
If your car is on private property and not on a public road, no offence has been committed.
Dealers obviously can't sell a vehicle that has breached regs and are in fact required to contact every owner who they have sold a fully tinted vehicle to, and inform them that they have.
Think thats about it... oh, tints are NOT included in an MOT Confused
Its not just about having something to hide, there are genuine reasons around security, safety and comfort. I have all round light tint, which is legal in most countries around the world and do not compromise road safety.. I do however believe that excessively tinted windows DO compromise road safety and look pretty naff!
One final point... why are light tint visors allowed on motorcyclists?? maybe the biker had an excessively tinted visor and didn't see the car!! Confused

Not quite Tim, in these circumstances the driver may not be covered by his policy but the insurance company still has to honour 3rd party claims. HSE TD6 (Java Black/Ivory)

Dont panic folks here`s what ya do....
Wind the windows down and drive off as its not law to have any other windows in a car other than a front.

You'd think they'd make it part of the MOT... but I suppose the light measurement equipment, training and whatever else would be required isn't worth the outlay given the large majority of cars don't have tinted windows. If I'm not mistaken, you're still allowed tinted windows - it's just you're not allowed to have them excessively tinted (i.e. over 70%). The factory tints therefore will still be perfectly legal....

Personally I despise coppers when they're on duty. I'd say of the majority that I've met when they're on duty they're wa Censored ers.
My dad was SO13 and it still doesnt change my mind.
I know a few friends who's dads are police officers and they're as nice as tim when they're off duty but from the ones I've encountered through my own quarrels with the police they're useless.

I have no respect for police as they do things like this...wasting time! Instead of catching real criminals and trying to make up for the useless justice system we have here in the U.K they prosecute people who can meet their bloody government targets.

I was cycling past Pinewood studios one time and a bored copper decided to pull me over for being on the phone...on a push bike!!! He was obviously bored and had nothing to do and even threatened to take my license away from me yet I was 16 so on this he got in a huff and went away.
One copper was blind because apparently I'd stolen my own car and replaced the number plate onto a RED TRANSIT...I can see the resemblance - White BMW Touring and Transit.
I get infuriated with this country being such a policed nanny state.
I can understand the police trying to crack down on the window tinting because for their own safety they dont know who's behind the window and what could happen to them. For all they know there could be a gun pointing at them so I think that a bit of front tint should be allowed atleast but not Limo style.
But I dont believe that they should be confiscating vehicles etc...Write them a warning of pay a fine but what they're doing if this is correct by going around looking for the tinting is stupid.
Grrr... Evil or Very Mad Rant over Shocked
I do apologise to anyone if they're relatives or themselves are coppers but grrrrr Thumbs Up Michael Potter

They only do it because of the way the government needs to collect lots of crime figures................ because we, the electorate, demand that they justify the cost to the Exchequer of the police. To get improved crime figures the police have to concentrate on the silly things as they produce the least paperwork. While having heavy tints on your front side windows might seem trivial to most, the folks are still criminals (ie they are breaking the law about tinted glass in the front windows of cars!), it's just that the police don't need to waste their time following up the crime, they just issue a compliance order and put it down in the statistics as a solved crime. I'm afraid that this is the state that WE, the electorate, have demanded of the police and government 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I haven't demanded anything of the police!! Maybe I should... Confused

Someone lost their cat this morning and apparently the police were immediately dispatched... forget who, someone famous. But the point is, if I lost one of my cats the police wouldn't give a flying monkey's toss.
