I always put it in access mode a) Because of what you say about normal being a bit high for those with short legs and b) because it puts all the electronics "to sleep" - it's a bit the same as closing down XP, you can have the full monty shut down or you can hoibernate, ready for a quick restart on switching on. If you lower to access mode then the car knows you won't be coming back to it for a while and goes to sleep instead of having everything on standby all the time.
