Sat Nav - A plus point

The Sat Nav on the RRS takes a knocking from members from time to time but I find it better than the TomTom that I previously had. I know it should be better! Yesterday was in a long tunnel and when I exited, because of the way it's linked up to the car it immeadiately figured where I was dispite being in the tunnel for over a minute (Traffic jam!) The TomTom used to take ages to pick up the Satelite signal. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

That's no surprise really. Built-in sat navs are connected to the odometer, wheels and if loosing reception eg in a tunnel do calculate the distance travelled whereas standard TomToms and similar devices do need a continuous sat signal.

That's called dead reckoning, FYI. Any good "factory" Navigation system should have it.

United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black

I used the Sat Nav properly for the first time today and thought it was actually quite good. Better than TomTom I used previously.
Even took me on a "sneaky shortcut" off of the M25, along a few hundered metres, and back on because of the stationary traffic. The traffic info is quite impressive imo!! Old enough to know better,
Young enough not to care!!!

Does the traffic info work on the US versions?

Nope, only in the UK - and perhaps some other European countries - they have this Road and Traffic Information network in place, that the Sport is able to receive and process via nav. AFAIK, the only OEM system able to receive similar traffic data in the US currently is Acura's, via XM satellite radio (subscription required), along with a handful of aftermarket units. I got all excited earlier this week after reading this (click on "The Sporty Range Rover"'s slide show and go to slide 6): http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11443_7-6411149-2.html?tag=txt

, but apparently it is just misinformation on the part of cnet... Maybe for MY07. We sure could use something like that here in So. California.

North America RRS/LR3 doesn't have the TMC (Traffic Message Channel) module, which uses FM-RDS (aka RBDS)... since it's not widely used in North America yet. It's brand new and hasn't caught on.

There are probably more GPS systems using XM Satellite Radio based traffic updates in vehicles on the road right now. Give it time...

It's the same as the one in std RR's I think and I don't think you'll find it's linked to your odometer....not 100% on that, but when it loses a signal it assumes you will drive in the same direction and at the same speed..therefore when it loses the signal for 20 seconds or so it essentially knows where you are......as grommett says...it's called dead reconing..same as flying

Yugoslavia 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black

I have the RRS in northern Italy this weekend, the satnav (premium no less!) is bloody hopeless outside of the bigger towns. I have the Tom Tom with the full europe maps and brought it along just in case. Sure enough I could find the street name and number of the hotel with tomtom, my RRS nav didn't have the street in its system. In Cortina it has only 12 streets listed and it doesn't recognise most of the roads around the hills - twice it showed me as being off all known roads! RRS TDV6 (gone)
RRS TDV8 HSE(gone, burned out)

The sat nav gets a speed pulse sent to it from the ABS module to let the nav system know the car is still moving linked with the gps it knows where it is and how far its traveled in any given time frame.
