The primary reason for the RRS weight issue is that is has a double chassis.

This is a very good question. So good in fact that I asked the chief designer of the vehicle (strangely called A Wheel) when he came to do a presentation of the Disco 3's launch last year (same floorpan, same weight issue). Basically he said that when LR set out to design the new vehicle they were determined that it would achieve certain pre ordained performance targets for saftey, torsional strength, suspension reach etc. As the vehicle developed through various prototypes the only way they found to achieve their targets was basically to keep on adding more and more metal to the floorpan. The implication was that if the design team had had longer to work on the job they could perhaps have started to engineer weight out of it. However using lighter but more expensive metal was too costly and they ran out of time. I wouldn't be surprised if a D3 / RRS "light" version was introduced in a year or two's time but for now we have one of the heaviest passenger 4x4's on the road but one that beats the competition in all those design criteria ways. Have you seen the Land Rover party trick where they balance a D3 or RRS on one front wheel and the oppisite rear wheel ? The body doesn't twist at all. Do that in virtually any other vehicle and you wouldn't be able to open a door for the amount of twist the vehicle would suffer. Mind you, one thing I have noticed is that the D3 and the RRS still don't seem to have been awarded an NCAP rating yet. I wonder whether the tests have not granted the vehicle the necessary 5 star result that the designers were aiming for .....? |
