One of many reasons, Tim, why the emigration figures are higher now than they've ever been before. This place is going to the dogs. I've considered leaving the country on the odd occasion, but it would be difficult for me to do at the moment. SuperT had the right idea

What is really annoying S is that the original post office wasn't even a stand-alone PO it was a corner in the village shop, not like it was costing a fortune to run! Of course with the loss of the PO now the future of the village shop is in jeopardy as well! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Agree, We are just waiting for them to do the same in our village. We have an elderly Post Mistress and we reckon as soon as she gives up that's the end of the post office in the village.

What amazes me is that the government is supporting these closures with £1.7 billion of funding to Royal Mail. Unbelievable.

The Co-op supermarket in Thurso has the postoffice in it, there were even objections to that. Our local PO is now a Weatherspoons. The postoffice counter was sold off and is a small shop on the high street, the sorting office is now in a small building elsewhere. At one time all the villages around here had a branch now they are all gone. At least the Postoffice Bus still runs, taking passengers and mail to the outlaying villages. Because the government now prefers to pay benefits by DD, you can get Car Tax on-line etc etc it has taken a huge source of income from the Post Office. The Post Office needs to look at how best to serve it's customers but they stick to the old rigid opening times. Why can't I have my postman pick up parcels from my house when he does his deliveries? 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

If it meant paying an extra 5p for a first class stamp, I'd be happy to pay it if it was going to allow local POs to stay open. But I agree, RoyalMail is struggling in a number of ways to keep up with the requirements of today's market. There are so many different services it could offer, but diversification needs to be more than just jumping on the financial services/broadband bandwagon.

Do any of you use the PO online stamp buying service? I never knew about it until I was visiting some friends who were busy printing out all the stamps for their business on their own printer and onto sheets of self adhesive labels

Living in the country we get one delivery per day anywhere between 10am and 12 noon, depends on which postman is driving the van. He will pick up any mail you have for posting as long as you have the correct postage on it. If you do miss a delivery here then you only have a 15minute window from the time he returns to the sorting office until it closes to collect it the same day.
