MP3 Players

My wife announced last night that for her birthday she would like an MP3 player and sound dock, but it must be able to receive the radio. It is to be in our bedroom which is 36' x 15' with a vaulted ceiling so it needs to be quite powerful and she is musical so it needs good quality.

Are all mp3 players sound quality the same with the same headphones/speakers? I had considered a nano with the Bose dock, but can this play the radio? Have you guys any ideas of a good system (not silly money) that would meet this need? Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

The ipods are the best but they don't have built in radios. You can however buy a radio receiver to add on which is the best way to go. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

VA doesn't the radio bit plug into the same socket as the dock?

I prefer the ipod as I now have an imac Embarassed and it would seem to make life easier, but are they any better than say a creative mp3 player? Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black

hi,

here are links to a few sites i use for reviews:

I'd also give the iPod my vote. Sound quality is excellent and it's so easy to use.

There are a few clock radio docks for the iPod, perhaps even one with DAB. if you want good quality from the dock, then you're going to have to pay for it.

Go to an apple store if you can because they have quite a few on display that you can listen to. I think the JBL ones (there are a few in the range) are good value for money.

Definitely the iPod is regarded as the best way to go. And because it's become the de facto MP3 player, you can get loads of other stuff that can support your iPod in loads of other ways.

For Xmas I bought Mrs S an iPod Nano and for her birthday I bought her one of those DAB radio iPod dock doobries so now she can listen to the radio OR her iPod whilst milling about the house.

Thud

compared to other PORTABLE music players I agree, however to use as a main listening source they're just acceptable imho.

The best dock I have ever used is the Scandyna Dock (http://www.scandyna-speakers.com/) - its a dock with a built in amp which connect speakers too (the Scandyna speakers are pretty cool looking).

In case of radio, then you could use the radio addon that Dom mentioned.

Personally however I'd look at it from a different angle - how about getting a quality DAB Tuner with an integrated Ipod Dock - take a look at the TEAC products http://www.teac.co.uk/2007site/pages/ipoddocking_home_prod.htm#

Hope that helps

The radio bit that apple make is a non starter with a dock apparantly.

The teac stuff looks great, I assume they are good quality (cheaper than Bose Mr. Green )

So does the player make a difference to the sound quality? Or are the players just judged on the UI? Sorry for all the questions, the MIL has a Creative that she raves about so I'd like to sound like I know a little about it Embarassed Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

sound quality is of course dependant on the bit rate of the saved file - anything 192kbps is good - anything you rip yourself will be fine, plus most tunes bought via iTunes is fair too.

The TEAC units are very good

p.s. I'm not a big fan of BOSE home Hi-Fi personally - if you go to any BOSE demo at a show etc you'll see the same demo they did back in 1990 Rolling Eyes - dont get me wrong - their lifestyle stuff is good equipment; I just wish they'd stop pretending small speakers and big sub is the future

Maybe someone as old as you VA - but not me thanks Rolling Eyes

Kaine so what you seem to be saying is the source of the file on the player is more important than the player? Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

in principle the media source is always the most important part of any Audio system - awful media cant be improved with any system - its probably an obvious thing to say, however sometimes its missed.

We try to rip music uncompressed as much as possible but sometimes clients want maximum capacity rather than quality which is a shame. iTunes downloads are always pretty good.

Good media, a decent mp3 player (e.g. ipod) and a good system to play it on (TEAC etc) then you'll be fine for replaying in a decent size room

One of my workmates has a fatman itube. its expensive but it is the mutts nutts, one of the best things he's bought his wife apparently.

I would also recommend buying some better earphone for the ipod. The ones that come with it are not good, i've bought myself and my wife some sennheiser cx300 in ear headphones. Very comfy and excellent sound also cheapat less than £20 from fleabay.
