Warranty Help

Guy's need your help Please!

Have a problem with the SL after a few days (or weeks lol) of not driving it i get a warning message tell me engine management off line (or something like that) as in the electrics don't work for a bit so have to drive for about 10 mins before you can move the seats and that

Anyway had the car in for a service about 18 months ago and when i rang up to ask if she was ready for me to collect i was told no! He said that they need a part and this will be in tomorrow. I was like I'm not paying for that as you didn't ask me first and all the rest of it. He said no i want have to cuz it's a recall job so Merc will pay Very Happy This part was a new alternator to fix the offline problem.

The thing is it's still doing it and it's also out of warranty now. But i remember a few service guy's telling me that even if a problem is still there after it is out of warranty they have to fix it as long as it has been looked/worked at when it was still in warranty!

Do you think i can fight/ask them to look at it and sort it for free and where do i stand with the law if anyone knows?? RRS TDV6 Gone but still around

Jay, before you march round to your local dealer and demand the service managers head on a plate I would advise that you do a little bit of research first.

As you don't drive the SL very often you may find that the battery voltage level is dropping below the recommended levels. This could mean that certain onboard electrical systems will not work until the alternator has kicked in fully or until the battery voltage level has risen above the minimum power level. This type of thing can also happen on the RRS. A good example of this is the cubby box fridge, the fridge will not switch on if the battery voltage is below a certain level.

Get hold of a battery voltage meter, check your battery voltage and then take the beast for a good long run. Check the voltage when you get home and then leave the motor overnight and check the voltage again the next morning. You may find that you have drained the voltage too low and now the battery will not hold its charge. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Maybe the battery is screwed... replace the battery? The alternator may also have needed replacing, but if the battery is crap no end of alternators will keep it charged.

Jay

As you state the car has always been like this, Shmoogle is spot on with his diagnosis. As the altenator has already been replaced, it certainly sounds like the battery is the cause of your problem. Carry out the checks that Schmoogle has suggested or get an auto electrician to check the battery.

I think your expired warranty would only cover any costs at the dealers if you had the fault looked at just prior to the expiry date and then taken it back again straight after the expiry date - as an unresolved fault. Gone - 2008 TDV8, Stornoway Grey, ebony, zabrano trim, TV, Tasmods, mudflaps.

I may be wrong, but it is my understanding that if an issue arises DURING your warranty period but persists OUTSIDE of it, as long as it is exactly the same problem which hasn't been rectified they are obliged to put it right.

Try Shmoogles suggestions but a call to your solicitor/Citizens advice will give you all the ammo you need for any comeback. Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

If it's simply a case of replacing the battery though - is it worth all that fight for the £60 the new battery will cost you? Why even involve the warranty, other than just for the principle of it?

Jay,

You may want one of these:

http://www.accumate.com/

I have a similar problem with my BMW as its a weekend car and during the winter months sees little use. They have also the attachment directly to the battery so you just plug it in when you get home and leave it till the next time you use the car.

Hope this helps,
