Does anyone know much about the BT Speedtester reliability? My BB speeds have just dropped from anywhere between 4Mb-6Mb/s to under 400kbps over the last few days.

Ran plenty of independant speed tests and with download speed results ranging from 300-400kbps, HOWEVER when I run the BT Speedtester (which is apparently the only tester my ISP, Plusnet, will recognise) I always get over 500kbps. For a 2Mb-8Mb line, BT only gaurantee 400Kbps or more, hence my ISP says they cant do anything.

Call me a cinic, but I get the feeling the BT Speedtester is being, lets say optimistic with the performance results.

Any thoughts? Thanks

I've always found it to be reasonably accurate. Not at home now, so can't test it (and won't be able to until I get broadband back again on 27/12)...

Time to get that leased line put in Kaine

A similar thing happened last xmas too - possibly due to everyone being at home in the village and all surfing the web maybe - its shockingly slow though

Do you know your contention ratio, Kaine? It'll either be 50:1 or 25:1, so it's quite easy to have your own speed drop to much lower levels simply by everyone being at home.
