Well, I had the chance to test my RRS in the snow for the 1st time this week. I was travelling back from Elgin to my home near Banchory and as the weather was so horrible I "of course" decided to forget the main roads and take the route over the mountains (Well, you've got to, haven't you)! Anyway, as I got to the highest point on the Cabrach Road It was pitch black & blowing a blizzard. The road had filled in with snow and there wasn't a tyre track in it, except for the ones being left behind me! I started to push the car in the bends and it did start to lose traction (as expected), So I popped it in to neutral and changed in to the Snow Setting - WOW, the dynamic of the car changed completely and although it felt that it was less sprightly on acceleration the stability and sure footedness was incredible. I was throwing the car around the bends having real fun and to be honest my bravery ran out before the cars ability to hold the road!! I was really dissapointed when I descended back below the snow line and had to change back in to Normal Road mode. Amazing bit of kit our RRS 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Yep, Thanks Tim. I know exactly what you're talking about. Living and working up here I'm pretty used to driving in all conditions. The snow I was in was the Lovely fluffy stuff and I had brake tested at several points just to be sure I wasn't on ice. It was bloody good fun I have to tell you, More from seeing the car do it's stuff than just the driving itself 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

My heart stopping/ brown trouser moments were with the Contientals that the Tdv6 came with - I would never ever have those on a car for the winter again. My new car is running on Pirellis and they are OK, the best all round tyre I have had in recent years were the Goodyear HP Wrangler Mud and Snow tyres. They were excellent in the snow and pretty impressive off-road too, they ran quietly onroad and had excellent wear characteristics but LR don't seem to fit them to RRSports 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

No, you can change your TR settings whilst in gear. You only need to engage neutral if changing between high and low range. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Oh, Ah well, I got that wrong, but I was doing it for the 1st time in a real situation and had a memory of having to change in to neutral from reading the manual - better safe than sorry at the top of a mountain in a snow storm! I'll know next time that I can just change on the go. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black 2013 Evoque 5 Door Pure Tech SD4 - Orkney Grey with Panoramic Roof (Mrs E's new baby) GONE - RRS - 3.0 TDV6 HSE - Santorini (2010) GONE - RRS - 2.7 TDV6 HSE - Java Black (2007) GONE - Porsche Boxster S - 3.2 - Black |

Hi, Sorry Im new here and this is my first post. I think you will find that most "normal tyres fitted to our cars are "crap" on snow as they are standard road tyres. Standard road tyres have a higher consistency of synthetic rubber which causes them to act a bit harder in temperatures from 7 degC downwards. Snow tyres (which look nearly identical) have higher concentrations of natural rubber which helps the evacuate snow and also stay soft. Even on Ice you will find that the snow tyres will grip more than normal tyres but only enough!

Good Point! Insurance will not cover you and also now in countries like Germany, if you dont have snow tyres on the car between October and March/April and it starts to snow, you are not allowed to drive the car even if you have chains and if they catch you they will fine you heavily! All - I can certainly vouch for the 20" Nokian tyres that I was using in Germany last year. They were as good as Contis on road / autobahn and I even took the car up pisted snow tracks without problem. It's hard to get 20" chains and they'd probably scratch your wheels anyway, so I found these to be the perfect solution for looks and grip.

I live in Bavaria and have a place in Austria too so know how bad the snow can be. I have Pirelli Scorpions and they are superb. The German law has changed too. You MUST have tyres that are "appropriate for the conditions". That means that if you are stopped and the police deem your tyres to inappropriate for the conditions, you will be fined, given points and will have to cease your journey on the spot. Basically you need snow tyres/all weather tyres by law now. |
