Spot on Kaine! Thumbs Up

Since getting my first 3 points three months ago, I've been a twichy wreck behind the wheel. Braking at every bend in case a plod jumps out with a speed gun (again), or over-braking at speed cameras to be double-safe. I'm now over-focued on the speedo at the expense of general alertness and awareness of driving conditions. This can't be right?

I'm a good driver who's not had an accident in 25 years. However, instead of being a relaxed considerate motorist, I've become a nervous speed-a-phobic, oblivious to anything other than the bloody speedo.

Call that "Road Safety", huhh!!!? Evil or Very Mad MY12 SDV6 HSE Sumatra/Ebony/Piano/Sidesteps/Privacy/Overfinch Olympus/JLR DRLs

I got caught last year at 46 in a 40 fist time in 26 years of driving. As VA mentioned it used to be 60 then got changed to 40. I had done 350,000 miles in the previous 7 years on the UK roads and never had a problem but because I had no previous convictions they offered me a speed awareness training course. The fine was £60 plus 3 points, but the days course was £80. It stopped me getting the points or the fine but if you get caught again in the next 3 years you don't get the chance of the course again. But the instuctor told me that there is a limit on the speed you get caught on as to whether you get offered the training course or not. He said 47 in 40, 58 in 50, and 70 in a sixty. I don't know if this applies in each county. You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.

I've been done plenty of times before.... actually, my license is at it's lowest level of points for some while. I've got 3 at the moment, but have spent the past few years fairly constantly with 6 as sets expire and then I get caught again - I have been up to 9 before. Most of it is unreasonable revenue generation and nobody will convince me otherwise. The amount of bumps that occur in the variable limits on the M25 are proof should it be required that people are paying more attention to cameras mounted on the rear of the gantries than the road ahead.... I am full agreement with you Nige. Thumbs Up

Also, your comments about eligibility for optional "Training Course" instead of automatic fine/points bears out my earlier comment that rule of thumb for NOT prosecuting is normally limit +10% + 2mph. So, 46mph in a 40mph would normally NOT result in a prosecution, be it camera or speed gun. Anything less is extremely unlucky anyway and you can see the rationale for an alternative one day telling off, sorry, "Re-education" instead of your Licence being clobbered with points.

So. we can safely assume that you'll be liable to prosecution and have your Licence endorsed should you get caught exceeding the limit by anything MORE than 10% + 2mph (ie 47 in a 40, 58 in a 50, etc). Evil or Very Mad MY12 SDV6 HSE Sumatra/Ebony/Piano/Sidesteps/Privacy/Overfinch Olympus/JLR DRLs

That's exactly what Clarkson said and I fully agree. Over-focus on speed and speedo must have a detrimental effect on other essential driving skills and road awareness, especially in congested, high volume or high speed situations.

A "Road Safety" initiative it is NOT!!!

As I own a car and van hire business, I tend to get letters from the police....

Mainly the renters get caught 44 in a 40 mph zone.... some parked on the bus lane in London got £80 fine and 3 points......some did 37 in a 30 mph zone...

And a renter just turned into a lane, JUST after the bus lane, he was fined £40 and 3 points...

VA, if you don't hear anything after 14 working days, then you should be fine.....Finger crossed!

This country has gone ballistic !!

Crazy!

You need to be more carefull in Mid Wales, North Wales - my mate just got done for 34 in a 30 and I got warned for 33.
I asked they guy on the speed awareness course and he said they have Zero tolerence down there now.
He said they are prosecuting for very small errors. He knows of a 33 in a 30 prosecution.
I can't see how the equipment and speedo can be proved accurate for this close. You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.

It's because of that idiot that is the Chief Constable out there... Richard Bronstrom I think his name is. He's a self-styled traffic dictator who seems to think we should all be driving horses and carts.

Has this Country gone mad? You can criminalised for a trivial and inconsequential lapse in speed monitoring, but legally granted asylum, without prosecution, after hijacking a plane? Shocked MY12 SDV6 HSE Sumatra/Ebony/Piano/Sidesteps/Privacy/Overfinch Olympus/JLR DRLs
