The crash just shown supports a lot of peoples views, the 4x4 was a lot safer. The people in the civic would most likely be dead, so that is why it's better to have a 4x4. Might sound selfish, but to be perfectly honest, I don't give a monkeys wotsits. 2002 Discovery Adventurer LE

unbelievable, what a useless misleading programme giving all the anti 4x4 activists more cause for for moaning

As for for the crash test, i hope that i am not in my large 4x4 and then hit by a larger vehicle say an arctic lorry

so should they ban all lorries

I am now off to the pub in one of my large gas guzzling dangerous 4x4s

It's scary how people fall for these programs. A friend texts me just as it's starting 'Ey andy watch Driving me crazy! Its on abt 4x4'. My reply 'I'm watching but I expect it's going to be the bigger piece of biased s Censored t I've seen in a long time'. At the end of the program she replies 'Well it's true... they're too big and gas guzzlers!'. My reply to that 'don't tell me you've jumped on the bandwagon, it's not f Censored ing true' Evil or Very Mad 2002 Discovery Adventurer LE

I feel your anger and am appalled by the programme.

I would rather be in a 4x4 than a normal family saloon, did they not say that a Government study has confirmed they are safer?

Perhaps putting more effort into upgrading safety in family cars would be more prudent?

As for lining up kiddies behind a 4x4. To me, the whole programme has heightened public awareness and hatred towards the vehicles and has portrayed the drivers as arrogant and inconsiderate road users. Victorian streets and modern living will never find a balance, it to me, is not the fault of 4x4 drivers but the sheer volume of people trying to get the kiddies too school in urban areas because the government has been shutting schools all over the country for years. Then they put bus's on the school route in urban areas to take them to school and I am sure that the visibility around a bus is far worse. They portrayed congestion at school times and Mr. Seargent driving a vehicle he had never been in before let alone a left hand drive. Such a suitable vehicle choice. no regrets!

Hi Pussy, and everyone.
I am not sure the government do think they are safer.
I wrote to my MP Jonathan Shaw as I thought the Government were helping the anti 4x4 lobby.
He wrote back a 3 page letter in which he said that they were unsafe to everyone even the driver and he said that all 4x4's "suffer from appaling design faults!
I sent the letter to Land Rover Monthly and Nick King wrote back:
"Hi John
Many thanks for the letter I have passed this onto editorial who I think will find it very interesting ! I have had a read and it amazes me how blinkered they are in the HATE 4x4s , look out in the mag as you may see editorial about it in the NEWS section
Many thanks again

Kind regards

Nick King

Land Rover Monthly

Advertising Sales Manager"

This was a response from John Carroll IPC editor "Thanks for sending us your letter and the response from your MP. I find it amazing that the people elected to run the country just trot out this cliched nonsense without a moment's thought as to its validity. Can your MP really believe that the teams of engineers at companies such as Land Rover really churn out cars with 'appalling design faults?'

If it's okay with you - in view of the fact that it's your personal correspondence - I'd like to write to this MP on behalf of the magazine asking for clarification of this point and his sources as to who 'leading specialists' and others are.

Regards,
JC

I also sent it to Land Rover and received the following "Thank you for your patience in this matter, I can only apologise for the delay in replying but as Mr Shaw has been involved as a member of the transport select committee in the past, I thought it would be prudent to have this information provided by Land Rovers sustainability manager.

Thank you for drawing this to our attention. We share you concern about the impact of the VED changes and the way these have been communicated.

The environment is an issue we take very seriously and we are actively improving the performance of our vehicles in this respect. For example the V8 diesel we have just introduced on Range Rover and Range Rover Sport has effectively replaced the naturally aspirated petrol engine in terms of performance, but with 30% lower CO2 emissions.

We have also just introduced a unique CO2 offset programme whereby the emissions from the manufacture and, in the UK, first 45,000 miles of any Land Rover from 2007MY onwards will be offset through investment in CO2 reduction programmes around the world. If you would like any more information on this initiative, please visit http://www.landrover.co.uk/gb/en/Company/S...gramme.htm

The reality is this new VED charging actually applies to a wide range of vehicles. If fact only half of 4x4s sold are actually in band G and, of the 849 vehicles listed in band G, only one fifth are 4x4s.

Further, focussing on one particular small sector (band G only represents about one tenth of the total UK market), will not impact significantly on the overall emissions situation. For example 4x4s in total account for less than 1% of the UKs man-made emissions of CO2.

According to the budget statement, the environmental impacts of the VED changes are expected to deliver 0.1 to 0.17 million tonnes of CO2 reduction by 2020. This is only 0.2% of current UK CO2 emissions from passenger cars

With respect to the safety, a modern 4x4 such as your Range Rover Sport is engineered from the ground up to provide crash compatibility with normal cars. They are also equipped with a vast array of sophisticated chassis systems, such as dynamic stability control, which deliver standards of roadholding, handling and braking that match or exceed those of many conventional cars, as I am sure you can attest from your own experience.

The Range Rover Sport has not yet been tested by NCAP, however the Discovery 3, which has a similar body structure, achieved safety ratings across the three measures (adult occupant, pedestrian and child protection) which are competitive with comparable mainstream executive cars.

Further the 'command' driving position and traction capabilities of our vehicles are a significant factor in enabling drivers to avoid accidents in the first place. As such safety is consistently given as the main reason for choosing a 4x4 in customer research.
