Questions from a potential owner...!

Hi all,

First post on a great forum! I've been reading as a 'guest' for a few weeks now as I'm considering changing my current car (996 C4S) and fancy an RRS.

A friend lent me his TDV6 a few weeks ago and I have to say I really liked it - not as much speed as I'd like (but I do appreciate a car like a RRS has more to offer than pure speed, and is not going to be a 911), which brings me on to a dilemma. I'm thinking of:

1. Buying a 1 year old, low miles TDV6 and having it chipped - how much difference would the chipping make, and any suggestions?

2. Buying a new TDV8

Having looked around it appears you can pick up a TDV8 for around or just under £50K (assume this may be imported - is this a big issue with RRS?) however if I took this option I'd probably want to finance part of the cost. Or if I go for the used TDV6 option I can probably muster the cash together.

i'd probably keep the car 2-3 years, and am looking at the right balance between the right car, and how much it'll cost me...

Any thoughts and suggestions welcome!

Thanks,

Justin Currently 911 but need a change!

I'd go for TDV8 not only because of the engine but also because of the extras that come with it. I also think you'll like being the first owner as you're planning to keep it a while and I anticipate better than average residual values

TDV8 can be chipped later too if you feel the need.

I've heard that imported RR's get hammered compared to UK sourced. I think it's wrong, it's the same car after all. For sure get an import if you'll keep it for a while.

I bought the SC though. All the toys and best performance.

Town mpg is 13. Cruising at 80 she does 17.
Not really an issue compared to a C4S but maybe you're going to do loads of miles and mpg is a real factor. 2022 P440e AB

Hi thanks for the replies, yes, I will probably be doing more miles than currently - probably up to 15,000 per year, so the economy of the diesel is quite important to me - if I had fuel card, the Supercharged would certainly be on the list Very Happy Currently 911 but need a change!

Hi Justin, welcome to this insane world of RRS torture.

I have just sold a 911, as I was fed up with PC plod jumping out from behind hedges, or trying to take photos of me - also its lack of practicality.

Coming from a 911 you must be a 'driver' person rather than just the 'cruiser' type of person, therefore you will need some sort of overtaking performance. The TDV6 gives excellent performance but is a bit lacking in grunt for those 'B' road overtaking manoeuvres. The answer to this is to have the engine chipped.

However, if you want real performance without the petrol costs of the SC, then the TDV8 is going to have the edge on the chipped TDV6. Best of all will be the chipped TDV8, which will give you near SC performance with reasonable fuel economy for your 15,000 annual mileage.

Coming from a 911 I think you already know what you want and are just trying to justify it to yourself. Order the TDV8 and get it chipped. If you don't, you will spend the next three years wishing you had done so. Thumbs Up Gone - 2008 TDV8, Stornoway Grey, ebony, zabrano trim, TV, Tasmods, mudflaps.

Justin,
If it was me,, and planning on keeping the car for 3 years and the main vehicle, i would go for the TDV8 if only because of rrsjo logic ,

Imports are frown upon, but only as sour grapes ,mainly by the LR dealers, and use it as a excuse to bid you low come px time !! ,They do not make unsafe cars to be sent overseas !! Am just ordering a new 07 Defender, and so far a saving of near £2.5k

I went for a 4.4 HSE as its not used everyday, so fuel is not a real problem !! and kept the 911 TT Very Happy Touch wood, Mr plod has left me alone so far Whistle 997 TT, RR TDV8 Vog SE 90 V8 Hybrid

Thanks for all the comments guys, and reading comment from an ex-911 owner really helps - I have a feeling TDV8 (and chipped at some time) is probably the way to go! Currently 911 but need a change!

Welcome Justin! Very Happy

As others have said... the TDV8 is def the way to go and on MY08 has all the toys you could want really. Will you spec from scratch or have a hunt to see if one's available somewhere?

Yes, having looked at the standard spec, it seems to cover just about everything! That being the case I'll have a hunt around to see what I can find and/or look at other options (Uk vs Import etc)

Getting quite excited now! Currently 911 but need a change!

There are specialist RR dealers on the net like Findmyrangrover and Kam100 (who will find deals on ay car not just RRS) on this website can also set up some pretty keen deals, give them a try too.
It would appear that getting any discount on a TDv8 (there is a waiting list for factory orders) would be very difficult, but TDv6 HSE's appear to be able to get £1500 - £2000 on UK sourced cars at the moment.
FindmyRangerover has a discounted TDv8 but that is because it is preregistered, Java with Ivory leather, Hybrid TV and Tyre Pressure Monitoring and £2500 discount - doesn't say how many miles are on it though. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW
