Dreaded whine/noise, possibly diff?

Hi all.
Not sure whether this should be under the technical section but looking at the topics there, activities seems to be pretty non-existent.
My 07, TDV8 at 98K miles has developed a sort of low whine/noise from I think the front of the car. I believe it has getting worse over the last thousand miles. I thought it may be a wheel bearing but Wheels/hubs revolve quietly.
Doing a bit of googling there seems to have been a lot of differential problems in the past. I’m going to change all the oils in the differentials and transfer box as well as doing an auto box service in the next couple of weeks.
What is the consensus of opinion with this problem, is it common?
Thanks.

Failed differentials, front and rear are not unheard of. Unfortunately if you can hear the noise in the well insulated cabin it's too late for an oil change to help anything. The bearing has already failed if it's loud enough to be heard.

I recall that around 2007 there was an issue with the internal casting coating breaking up that then contaminated the bearings and led to failures. If you drain the oil see if there is any Teflon like debris in the oil, if there is then the coating has failed.

Thanks for responding.

I changed the oils in both axles and the transfer box. The axles were definitely a bit contaminated although I was pleased to see the transfer box oil look like new so could well have been done fairly recently. I tend to agree that is the differential itself as usually the so-called bearing noise differs when traveling from a left hand corner to a right hand corner, but this stays pretty much the same.
If this is so, what is the next step? Remove it and get it refurbished or is there another alternative?

When I had a 2007 L320, I stripped the front diff, wire wheeled all the failed coating out and rebuilt it with new bearings and it was as good as gold. Sold the car with 320k on it and it's still around with near on 450k miles on it.

Ruddy Nora! I only do about 4K miles a year, nearly all local. I think I will keep using the car until the noise increases and then bite the bullet and get it rebuilt. Any recommendations of who to have the work done by?

Sorry, can't help on that one. I was doing 50k a year for probably the fist 6 years I owned it. Look up FM07KMX on a vehicle check app, clean pass this year!
